I work as a blogger for businesses although I do a variety of different types of writing. I particularly enjoy writing about all aspects of design and creativity. I think that your home should reflect your personality and that it should change as you change. More about me at www.kathrynvercillo.com and http://diaryofasmartchick.com.

Best Rooms for Reading a Good Book (4 comments)

View Slideshow
All of this cold weather is making me want to stay indoors and read a book instead of going outside. I have found over the years that I like to read certain types of books in certain spaces in my home. A juicy private book gets read in the bathtub. A mystery novel should be read by candlelight near a window while I watch a storm. Books that I'm reading for work get read at the desk. Do you have a special space where you read different types of books?

Any room in the house can be a good place for reading unless there is too much in that room to distract you. I think it's a good idea to put little bookcases and side tables all around and to use them to store the books that go best in those spaces. The books add some ambience to the space and it's convenient to pick up and read them wherever you left off.
A window seat is my number one favorite spot for curling up and reading a book. A good mystery or true crime book is perfect to read here on a dramatic rainy day!

A fireplace is another terrific place to read a book. Light a fire and cozy up to it with an old favorite or a new romance novel!

Who doesn't like sinking into a bubble bath and reading a good book. Novels, memoirs and books of poetry are all great reads in the bathtub. Having creative decor like this around your tub will entice you to do this even more often!

A comfortable outdoor porch area is an ideal place for catching up on some reading. At this time of year you really need a porch that has outdoor heating or a fireplace to warm up by as you read. What type of book would you read here? A nature book perhaps?

A home library is obviously the best place to read if you happen to have room for one in your house. You have the world at your fingertips in a special room like this. Your imagination can just take over.

A comfy chaise lounge is a terrific place to laze around with a good book. It doesn't really matter where in the house this sofa chair is located as long as you get a cozy one!

A great bedroom is ideal for staying inside all day with a new book. I like a bedroom that has a view of the outside so that you get some natural lighting coming through while you read.

Do some serious reading at the desk in your home. This is an ideal place for doing academic reading, intense non-fiction reading and any kind of book-based research.
Yellow Black and White Desk
Do you have a room in your home that serves as a creative space or art studio? That's a terrific place to read any type of book that inspires you. If you like to browse through craft books and art books then there's no better room in the house.

This might sound strange but I like to prop myself up on a staircase and do some reading here. I think it makes me feel a little bit childlike. This is a terrific place for reading aloud to others, especially if you're reading books with pictures, because the others can sit up higher than you on the stairs and see the images as you read.
