In many homes, the south-facing room is the sunniest spot in the house because windows that face south receive the most direct sunlight throughout the year. These sun-drenched spaces are warm and well-lit during the day which can be a blessing in the winter, but it can also be too much of good thing. South-facing rooms sometimes benefit from a drop in visual temperature. The best way to accomplish this is by using cool colors.

| If you prefer a neutral wall color, you can still cool down your space by installing silvery-blue window shades. Repeat the use of this color in your furniture, accessories and carpet or area rug. Neutral color to try: Yosemite Sand AC-4 by Benjamin Moore |
If you enjoy the bright and sunny feel in your room but like the idea of using a cool color, then a tinted white will work well for you. These are very pale hues that will add a small amount of color to your room without distorting the natural light.

| By using a bluish-gray in your sunny room, you'll get the benefits of using both blue and gray. That means twice the cooling effect and a double dose of elegance and style. Try: Silver Gray 2131-60 by Benjamin Moore |
For smaller south-facing rooms, paint both the walls and ceiling with the same shade of blue. This will cut down on the contrast and make your room appear larger.

You can still use warm colors in a south-facing room, but to keep things cool, use the warm hues for accents only and choose blue or green for the walls.

also, all the colors seem on the lighter side. Is that necessary if you got southern exposure?
You can now use a mesh roller blind that will block out sun and heat and possibly reduce light too - if that is a factor for you. I'm presently replacing my curtains in my problem area and am using a separate blockout lining that I can just pull across in the afternoon to protect curtains, carpet and furnishings. If it does deteriorate before my curtains, then I only have to replace that.
