Your Perfect Lounge Space: Great Ways With Sectionals

amanda fox This post is exactly what I needed! We've been shopping for a couch. With four teenagers (and their friends) in the house, there is never enough seating. I think that chocolate brown sectional would do us just fine. Now I just need an extra fridge LOL. Thanks for sharing. This has given me lots of new ideas on what to do with our family room. :)

rileysgranny We've been shopping for a sectional for our newly enclosed front porch, but haven't picked out one yet. The porch is completely enclosed in sliding windows (6ft. x 6ft. ea.) and my husband wants nothing in the room but a sectional, a coffee table and his big-screen TV, which is already hanging in the corner of the room. Nothing in front of "his" windows. We dislike micro-fiber, thought about leather, etc. After doing some reading, I've decided something in Sunbrella fabric in a neutral color would be our smartest choice. Of course he wants at least one recliner in the sectional and I'd like a chaise. Our budget is somewhat limited, but I want something that will hold up to the dog, the husband and the grandkids. Would love to get some input on where to look.

msutherby We are renovating and I'm debating on 2 sofas vs. sectional. I'd love to know if anyone regrets getting a sectional? It seems like having fewer arms (2 sofas=4arms to put your head on and watch a movie could be a drawback?) A sectional would work better in the room though. I'd love to have any advice anyone might have?

shezdc I agree with hipditch. I'm buying a condo and it's open living, dining and kitchen. Not a lot of space and wondering if a sectional could work.

tcufrog We bought a a u-shaped sectional with built-in chaise that seats 7 from a custom leather furniture store because our downstairs small open floor plan wouldn't easily fit anything else comfortably. Basically the kitchen opens into the breakfast nook, hallway and small living room. All of that area is tiled except for a small living area dominated on one side by floor to ceiling windows and on the adjacent wall by a built-in entertainment center and fireplace. We were able to take advantage of that small space best by designing a sectional that fit the curves of the space without dominating it and by placing the chaise against the windows so the view isn't blocked.

When we designed the sectional we added 2 accessories that you would have liked: 2 removable armrests with built-in cupholders. The armrests can be inserted between any two cushions allowing for maximum flexibility. When we are using the sectional to hang out as a family we keep them in and we were entertaining formally we remove them. It's the best of both worlds.

Karen Ho Fatt Ditto the points above. Sectionals are great for both large and small spaces. Although they can be unweildy, most you can purchase where each piece is attached with clips to hold them together so that youu can separate each piece. (note the cheaper models may not have this function). You can also add a console table behind them or entertainment cabinet to hide the broad backs a bit as they can be quite dominant in a very open space. Love curling up in the corners to watch TV. We rest in front of the tv all the time and as we near the end of our renovations, are designing a set to fill the corner with a daybed at one end so we can move it around.Publisher,familyfirepit.com

dancingfish I have a love/hate relationship with sectionals. We had one for a number of years in our family room. It does seat alot of people. It is wonderful for napping. But it visually takes up alot of space and limits rearranging of the furniture. I tend to move pieces from one room to another and was stuck for years with the same layout.

Denise Vilim hipditch and shezdc - the Forte Sectional at Chia'sso is a bit smaller in size than most sectionals and very elegant. I believe it only comes in a charcoal gray color and is rather modern in style, however at less than $1,000, couldn't hurt to check it out.

My hubby and I just purchase our first ever sectional - Ikea's Karlstad Sectional in Isunda Gray - 2 weeks ago and are very pleased with it. The nice thing about Ikea sofas are the removable/washable/interchangeable covers and of course, the price.

Juliet Potter We recently moved into a home with a 2 story family room with 5 connected souring windows to match - so we knew decorating would be a bit of a challenge. We chose a sectional (think slipcovered Potterbarn) to fill the large space. Coming from a smaller previous home, I agree that sectionals tend to work best in larger spaces. We have been very happy with our choice because of the family lounging ability, but it does take some thought as to a more permanent layout. Even though ours will come apart to change which side of the L-shape is longer, I think you really have to choose carefully where it will reside. It divides well as others have mentioned which is a plus since our kitchen to family room area is all open. Although our fabric is light, I don't regret the decision at all in my purchase.

tilander I love our sectional.. it can be very cozy for laying around with your sig others feet in your lap, and as for moving it around... I have moved mine three times and each time it feels fresh.. not a problem at all.

ds design studio hipditch and shezdc, you could absolutely use a sectional in a condo if you get a small version. One that looks like a sofa with a chaise on one side, like the Chiasso Forte that aprilaries suggested, should work. Look at the Pottery Barn page and play around with some of the components for other options. If you're not placing the sectional in a corner, make sure there is at least 36" of walking space behind it. Best bet is to measure the room and draw a floor plan to bring with you when you go shopping. Good luck!

patscats2 Today you can buy small sectionals that can fit any space. That's what we had to do for our living area that is in the same space with our kitchen/dining areas. It's one big great room. We purchased the Flexsteel sectional that is 2 loveseats basically joined by a corner section. It doesn't seat a lot of people, but it's very pretty, comfortable and takes up a lot less room that sofa's.

lmacedo We bought a sectional, and I regret it. I've realized that I like the structure and formality of sofas. It also limits design, so make sure you are staying in the same house for a long time. We've moved twice since buying our sectional, and it's always a challenge to fit it in. We'd have much more flexibility with a sofa & loveseat. Ours is super comfy, though, and it's great to sit in the corner. One other thing: we bought the comfy sectional with lots of pillows, and it always looks a little slouchy -- a drawback of the pillow-back style.

lulumurphy I love sectionals! The challenge is that we purchases an expensive one with 2 chaise components and 2 ottomans. The room is 18 x 12 and obviously it's too big for room. We miscalculated and need to work with it. any suggestions on how to arrange it? One wall is windows and we want a tv...Help!!!
