The Most Versatile Seating in the House
It's a Side Table, It's a Chair — It's Whatever You Need Now
Houzz Contributor. Hi There! I currently live in a 1920s cottage in Atlanta that I'll describe as "collected."
I got into design via Landscape Architecture, which I studied at the University of Virginia. I've been writing about design online for quite a few years over at Hatch: The Design Public Blog.

Short little stools have been catching my eye lately — are they end tables? Can you sit on them? Are they meant to be clustered or put in pairs as a coffee table? Are they nightstands? To sum it up, the answer is yes to all of the above. If you are constantly switching up items in your home and rotating them around like I do, you'll love having a few of these babies around your house because you can keep them in constant motion.
Stools can be used as an alternative to dining chairs, especially if you don't want your guests to linger too long after dinner! Seriously though, they are also great for kids at a crafts table. There's a fun mix of wood and suede at this dining table.

Instead of having a large bench or settee at the foot of this bed there are two charming stools that pick up on the wood of the headboard.
This little wooden stool not only functions as different pieces of furniture but can also be oriented different ways. When you get sick of looking at it in section, you can turn it 90 degrees for a completely different table.

This carved piece stands out because of its materials and shape, but its slender proportions keep it from overwhelming the other furniture in the room.
Another pro for stools at the table – they can be tucked underneath and keep the tablescape you've created in clear view.

These small lacquered stools are a great match for this large sinuous sectional sofa — you can move them around as you move yourself and your cocktail around.
This lightweight leather stool easily transforms from side table to extra seating.
This stool doesn't block too much of that spectacular S.F. view and plays off the geometry in the painting well.
Well it's finally happened. The West borrowed Chinese garden stools from the far East, brought them onto the porch, then the living room, and at last to the bathroom! This piece adds global texture to this bathroom as well as provides a spot for your towel, wine or tabloid. If you need to supervise little ones in the tub, it's a great seating alternative to, well, you know.

These three blocky wooden stools form a bedroom bench.

This Eames Walnut stool has always reminded me of a chess piece. It can be moved around this bedroom to wherever it's needed. When someone is having a sleepover on the daybed it serves as a nightstand.

These stools add texture and extra seating to the room. If the designer had opted for chairs here, the room would have looked crowded.

This simple block adds a slightly rougher element to the room and plays off the bed's wood.

| Two eclectic stools paired together are a stylish alternative to a coffee table.
Tip: When looking for a coffee table online, expand your keyword searches. Try searching "upholstered ottoman," "storage cube," "stool," "X-bench," "nesting tables," "side tables" and "accent tables." |
This cluster of two leather stools and a floor lamp is balanced and give you everything you'd need from a traditional end table.
Tip: It's pretty hard to go wrong when you group things in threes. Here the floor lamp and the two stools make a good cluster.
So what are you waiting for? If you are bored with your house start switching up your end tables with your nightstands, coffee tables and dining chairs. It's fun!
