I always enjoy Kit's ideabooks, and in reading her recent one entitled Ten Ways To Use Pink in a Girl's room, I had to laugh because I was so NOT a girl who enjoyed pink. Don't get me wrong, as they say in Flower Drum Song, "I enjoy being a girl": I had pink in my room, love Shabby-Chic-ish frills, wear hot pink stilettos.
But, for me, I love the classic English hints that non-pink femininity suggests. How easily blues and greens and yellows and reds and creams for a girl also integrate well into the rest of a home that has no pink. With five brothers, no sisters, and a son, I first reacted three years ago to the news that we'd be having a girl by saying first how grateful I was and then, "Really? Really? Pink and lace?" As a balance to Kit's great ideabook, here are some hints for parents who can't quite think pink.

Compensate for bolder primary colors in a girl's room by thinking in delicate detailing. The embroidered look of these elephants adds a perfect balance and subtle touch to beautiful white; and adding one meaningful animal rather than a slew of stuff in the crib keeps it simple.
In an older girl's room, incorporating touches of color surrounded by much white can create a delicate and unique look. Mixing prints, especially lighter ones, can create an interesting and more "girly" aesthetic.

This green room could easily accommodate a boy or girl baby. Touches of blue complement the green. Make this room work for you by incorporating green or blue toiles or florals in the linens and window dressings, adding scalloped edging to the bookshelves, hanging feminine art such as vintage flower bouquet prints. This nursery, while it can become incredibly girly, also offers versatility: change out the above-mentioned details for bolder stripes and plaids, for instance, and the nursery is ready for little boy blue.

| Yes, yes, this room has pink in it, and adorably so. A pleasant alternative would be to replace the pink with red chambray and other muted reds or fabrics with delicate patterns incorporating red. The actual effect with balancing the blue walls and whites would be very similar as here. |
