There was a banquette in the kitchen of my childhood home, which was quite unusual at the time. While it made for a fairly cosy atmosphere, we used to argue about who had to slide into the corner. And when someone had to go to the bathroom....

However it did make yards of kitchen storage for those big bowls.

There's a restaurant here in Atlanta with one huge one and it is such a PITA to get in and out! It's like being on a plane, I always make sure I grab the aisle seat, or go under the table to escape ;)

We had a banquette in our kitchen when I was a child but for some reason we called it the nook or the breakfast nook although we took all family meals there. All of us sat on the banquette except mom who had a little stool she tucked under the table when she wasn't seated there. I guess it gave her the freedom to pop up and down and look after the food. Dad sat besider her but on the banquette, acting as a "stopper" to the one open side. The rest of us (5 kids) lined up in order of age, me next to Dad. And yes if nature called, we were excused and ducked under the table to escape. In later years my parents remodelled and in order to fit a dishwasher into the tiny kitchen, they replaced the nook with a fridge and pantry wall. A great improvement in one way, but I always loved that rather unique place we all packed together and enjoyed our childhood. Thanks for the memories, deodand!

Hi i love love love the pics. I own a townhome annd my set up is exactly like the first pic so I am def intrested in making one. I have done some research and I found a lady who shared how she made hers. I do have four kids so hopefully they wont mind ducking under the table. Thanks for posting and giving me some ideas!
