Kitchen & Dining Room Seating: Consider a Banquette (8 comments)

I started collecting these images a few months ago, but as I sat to write this ideabook tonight, I wasn't sure I knew exactly what a banquette was - did it have to be in a kitchen nook? A restaurant? Does it need to be built in? Did it need to have a curve to it? Free dictionary dot come says it's "an upholstered bench." I had no idea it was so simple.

I'm loving the freedom we have with eat-in kitchens and dining table seating these days. Gone are the days where you have to have six matchy-matchy chairs that are in the same style of the table. One great option is a banquette. It can fill a booth in a kitchen, tuck under a wall in a dining room, and even provide storage underneath.
This elegant banquette allows the dining area and living area to exist in one space.

This is the same zoning idea as above with a larger and plusher palette.
Dining
Check out the wonderful shelf behind this curved banquette. What a clever use of space!

This home is an open lofty space, and the banquette helps delineate an eating area.

This lovely hexagonal banquette is free standing and fits the table perfectly.

This banquette is a great place for family to gather while the chef is on duty.
by Nathan Kipnis Architects, Inc.
Here the upholstery and color palette tie the seemingly disparate pieces together.
Dining
This banquette exists in perfect symmetry.
Dining
A fun combination - wooden table, Craftsman built in, and 1930s aluminum cafe chairs.
by Austin Patterson Disston Architects
I throw this picture into SO many ideabooks - I love the simple bench with the round table and Bertoia wire chairs. The only thing I'd lose is the TV.
Dining Room
This space is a little bit retro and modern at the same time.

Love the Austin Patterson Disston nook and its modern elements with a bit of retro industrial detail. Fun ideabook.

These are a lovely way to use space, but I wonder about how many people enjoy sliding around a seat. www.satisfiedsole.com

Gorgeous. Good work.
Built-in banquette seating in the bay window allows people to sit within the extended bay portion of the room and have better views. Saarinen dining table provides clear kneespace for users in wheelchairs.
Built in cantilevered sofa in bay window sitting area.

Rethinking a formal dining room using 2 banquettes as perfect end caps. They add extra cozy seating and such visual interest.

There was a banquette in the kitchen of my childhood home, which was quite unusual at the time. While it made for a fairly cosy atmosphere, we used to argue about who had to slide into the corner. And when someone had to go to the bathroom....

However it did make yards of kitchen storage for those big bowls.

There's a restaurant here in Atlanta with one huge one and it is such a PITA to get in and out! It's like being on a plane, I always make sure I grab the aisle seat, or go under the table to escape ;)
