I'm something of a minimalist, so I'm a fan of any piece of furniture that serves multiple purposes. Plus, I used to be a really big fan of teenage slumber parties. The combination of the two means that I love daybeds.
They're so functional - two jobs in one! - and can be really great looking. They serve a great purpose, too, especially in a small apartment or a den/guest room.
I tend to think of daybeds as super girly affairs, covered in frilly pillows, but they actually come in all different styles, so there's one that's right for every type of space.

| This daybed from West Elm is super flexible - it can be modern or feminine or both. |

I love the way this Barcelona daybed works as extra seating in this modern space.

| "Just a Girl's" daybed is pretty and girly and reminds me of when I was a kid. |
This is another great example of how well a Barcelona works.
Daybeds are a perfect addition to a pretty guest room - this one works as a sitting space, a place to toss clothes, or as an extra place to sleep.

So ladylike! This narrow daybed begs for a handmaiden, doesn't it?
I love these little poufy pillows - they add so much femininity and drama.
This is a great way to set up a kid's room - two beds, each of them multipurpose.
This daybed looks perfectly comfortable and also perfectly sleek.

Peter Medvin Here's a variation on the theme of multi-use beds. Zoom-Room is an electronic, remote controlled retractable bed, like a 21st Century Murphy bed. Except that it's completely undetectable, fits any decor, and you can put your flat screen TV (or books, or knick knacks, etc.) in front of it. You can see more at www.Zoom-Room.com.
