I Spy: Musical Instruments Around the House
Compose a Great Space With the Shapes and Promise of Music
Houzz Contributor. Hi There! I currently live in a 1920s cottage in Atlanta that I'll describe as "collected."
I got into design via Landscape Architecture, which I studied at the University of Virginia. I've been writing about design online for quite a few years over at Hatch: The Design Public Blog.

Sometimes music in the home means someone rolling up to the piano like Elton John and filling your house with great music. Other times it's suffering through a kid squeaking on a clarinet as they dedicate themselves to practice. Either way, it contributes to the ambiance. Even when these instruments are not in use, they can still contribute to a home's ambiance. Whether you have a big open space that can fit a grand piano or you're just looking for a shelf to place your trumpet, musical instruments can play a very interesting part in interior design.

The vintage look of this dark wood upright piano is a wonderful contrast to the other furnishings in this light, bright, modern room.
An open, all-glass corner like this one demands something that can stand up to its scale, like this piano.

Yes, I know when I used to pull up to the breakfast bar for my Frosted Flakes and the funny pages, my mom would provide a little live harp music to get my morning started off right. Alright, that's a lie, I was in the family room, eating them at the coffee table while watching The Great Spacecoaster.
Observation: As I cruised Houzz for pictures of rooms with instruments in them, a surprising amount of the rooms included an Eames Lounge Chair. The curved wood on this chair's frame goes well with the curves of a guitar and a the curves of a piano.

Did Junior find out playing drums wasn't all he'd dreamed after a few months? That's okay. While he moves onto bass guitar, move the drums into the living room and turn them into coffee tables. Also, just be grateful you don't have to listen to that racket anymore.

This trumpet is a great way to break up the shelfscape. Its brass patina is enhanced by the deep blue wall behind it.

These beautiful cases take on the look of sculpture in this space. Why chuck them in a closet when they look so good in the open?
This hip Austin renovation created a loft space dedicated to music.

This colorful lounge has guitar paintings on one side of the room and an electric guitar hanging on the wall on the opposite side. It definitely looks like a space for jamming.
A baby grand or grand piano is always a sleek and sophisticated addition to any room (provided there is ample space for it).
I think these drum set silhouettes are brilliant (and much quieter than the real thing). This room definitely has a musical theme going through it, and it works, especially because the color palette seems to have been inspired by that fun rug.

Something about seeing a keyboard in a crisp white room like this makes the theme song from Miami Vice go through my head. I mean that as a compliment – that was still one of the greatest TV Theme Songs of all time (Sanford and Son is still the best one and Friends is the all-time worst, but I digress.).
My friend Lucas is a singer/songwriter who attends a lot of shows. What to do with all of that musical memorabilia? Why, keep it in a shadowbox in the bathroom of course!

If there were graphic tape on any of these guitars, I would swear this is Eddie Van Halen's living room.
Speaking of guitars, this is the only time I've ever seen a guitar-shaped landscape. Totally fun if that's what you're into!
Clearly these people love music and want to show that through their home decor. You can't help but smile at this fun band on the run ... up the stairs.
I had a chance to interview this designer, and it turns out the piano was sort of a last-minute hand-me-down addition. Luckily, we've established that pianos and Eames Lounge chairs go together, and now you can see that pianos and zebra-print Aalto chairs aren't too shabby a pair either!

Here- three picture guitars top a bookcase, three percussion instruments (Cajons') provide alternate seating, and a blues legend hangs in the dining room.
