Winter Woodsy Gets an Update
Rustic-Chic Design Can Help Us Embrace Winter in Style
Houzz Contributor. Hi There! I currently live in a 1920s cottage in Atlanta that I'll describe as "collected."
I got into design via Landscape Architecture, which I studied at the University of Virginia. I've been writing about design online for quite a few years over at Hatch: The Design Public Blog.

I know, I know, winter is getting old! But it's time to stop complaining and try to embrace it in some way, otherwise we'll all go bananas. Hence, the girls and I are getting together for a reunion weekend in the mountains this weekend, and I hope the cabin we've rented is as cozy and woodsy as the one last year (though I don't think anything could top its Ms. PacMan machine). There's nothing better than cozying up in the mountains in a space full of rough timbers, rustic chic style and big stone fireplaces. This got me thinking about how to embrace these elements in a contemporary way. Lets take a look at how Houzz architects and interior designers achieve the ideal woodsy look for today.
In the entryway: Why not give your wet boots their very own woodstove to dry them off and warm them up?
In the kitchen: A rough hewn wooden countertop and a wood planked ceiling bring the woodsy to this modern space.

I know you're supposed to turn the lights off as you leave a room, but it would be so nice to approach this glowing lantern on a pair of cross-country skis and know some hot chocolate and a fire awaited me inside!

In the living room: You can keep things spare and minimal and still be cozy when you're in a glass box that's nestled in the trees.

Arrange the room so that you can enjoy the woodstove and the view at once.

In the bedroom: The room does not need to have a bearskin rug and antlers everywhere to get the woodsy look. Just open up the view outside and complement it with warm neutral hues and wood accents.

Neil Graham I think wood stoves are making a come back. I really like the look of a wood stove in the corner of maple wood paneled office or family room. They seem to add warmth to any room. http://www.dimensionbuildlv.com

Carolyn Zone9alady I just love the rough hewn timber look. Even if you don't live in the middle of the woods you can still get that feeling by bringing the trees inside. Love that long kitchen counter in pic #2

Joshua Sidlowski Wow, i think the fireorb is probably the best thing ever. Now that I've seen them I don't think I could possibly go on without one.

fredericklc I realize that I'm missing the point, but when I look at those floor to ceiling, wall to wall windows I see a lack of privacy, endless window washing and cold, cold, cold. They just aren't for me, I'm a window dressing kind of girl, I guess.
