Mudrooms: Ideas For The Hardest Working Room in The House

I love the idea of a mud room but they are not very common in Australia. Our laundry's tend to serve as a mud room because they usually have a door going outside to hang clothes on the line. If I ever build a house I am incorporating a mud room in it though!

Growing up, our laundry room WAS the mud room. As soon as everything ELSE is finished in the house we just moved into, I'm having hubby make me some cubbies, hooks and cabinets in our laundry, just like the last photo. LOVE it!

We are just finishing up a mudroom nook, located just inside our front door, that I am really loving. We have a small home in the country, just under 2000 sq. ft., and it's just me and hubby, our Jack Russell, and 32 chickens, so we didn't need anything bigger. It's only about 42" wide, but has a bench that my husband built in, modified from plans on Ana White's website (formerly Kockoffwood), with three little cubbies on the bottom. The surrounding walls are Valspar's "Oat Bran", but the bench, the wall behind it and the molding above where I placed 4 iron hooks, are all painted a glossy white. Because I felt it was a little dark, we placed a rust finished wall sconce meant for outdoors above the bench. I'm thinking of hanging the mirrored door off of a non-salvageable antique wardrobe on one wall in the nook, for last minute primping as I go out the door.

I'm liking all these ideas! we are in the middle of building our mudroom right now and as beautiful as these mudrooms look with the crisp light paint, and white beadboard. I just don't find it practical with my 4 kids 6 and under I just envision my 5yr old kicking her boots off and flinging it across the room I'm going to paint my lockers something dark and possibly tile up the wall 2 ft for easy wiping of scuffs. picture will be posted in january when it's all done.
