Guide to Granny Chic Decor
I work as a blogger for businesses although I do a variety of different types of writing. I particularly enjoy writing about all aspects of design and creativity. I think that your home should reflect your personality and that it should change as you change. More about me at www.kathrynvercillo.com and http://diaryofasmartchick.com.

| These great vintage chairs and ceramics could easily have come out of grandma's home. Their role in this colorful room gives them fresh new life. |
This is a great example of granny chic. The floral wallpaper and the flowery pillow could be from a time long gone. But combined with the modern furniture and cool green vase, this wallpaper works in a modern woman's home.
Wallpaper itself is central to the granny chic movement. Its strong revival in interior design proves that what's old can be made new again.

Grandmother's china makes a great art collection when displayed on a wal. Dress up the space with modern furniture and accessories to reduce the "granny" effect and enhance the "chic."

Crochet and knitting have made a huge comeback in the home. Baby's rooms are always a good place to include them.

This space is very granny. The softness of the pillows adds a contemporary touch.
A vintage cake stand that is filled up with colorful collectible items is a great granny chic touch. Glass cake stands are more common but this one has a pretty style to it, doesn't it?
What better way to celebrate this style in your home than to put vintage pictures of grandma inside of modern cool frames (especially if she's with Burt Reynolds)? Make an entire display mixing grandma's favorite accessories with yours!

debhenry I love this. My grams always had plates displayed on the wall and my Granpops handmade some beautiful furniture that she would either hand paint a bold color or finish it to show off the beautiful rich wood, depending on what he made the piece from. I find myself gravitating towards big substantial peices that have character because of them. And I proudly display plates on the walls of my dining room.

bettysgirl I love this all too....especially the plates. Grandma had them on her dining room wall. I put plates with roses in my bedroom. They are all stacked now but I am washing them up and displaying them again!!!!

twilcox Great ideabook! My grandmother, (she would never let us call her granny) was very chic and I use a lot of her style in my house now. Including painted furniture and crocheted pillows!

patscats2 I'm not sure I like the term "granny chic" because I'm not even 60 and have always loved Vintage because that's what I grew up with. I mix Vintage with current so the house doesn't feel like an old person lives here. People tell me my house is warm and inviting and they notice the mix and say they love it. So I guess I'm doing something right. I don't think certain styles ever go out of style and can be made to fit any decor. Example are wing back chairs. I don't know a time when they were "out." They can be dressed in any style fabric and fit right in with any decor, even the most modern. Thanks for this post. I hope more people realize the mixing of styles is fun and as far as I'm concerned, the most interesting way to design. Although pretty, I find rooms decorated in all one style can sometimes be very boring. Not to mention when people carry that same style throughout the house. Yawn!!!

luckykats So THAT'S what my decorating style is called!! Hmm..... I think I need to add a little more chic and a little less 'granny'. Although, I do love vintage.

marissa camacho I think granny chic works because it is warm, comforting and inviting. i just love our grandmother's and grand aunts' house. The three of them lived together and were very industrious women who lived in one huge house with three kitchens, two dining rooms, two living rooms, three sewing machines, antique armoires in each room and grooved marble-topped dining tables. My sisters and I realize only now how chic they were even then because they had very good taste which showed in their handiwork. they made us clothes with tatted lace collars, crocheted purses, hand painted and embroidered pillow cases, etc. So now, I know what granny chic is.

Casart Coverings Kathryn, you're right on about wallpaper's revival in interior design. The advancements in the properties of wallpaper-easier application and removal, texturization, personalized photo murals and many more have all change the way people feel about wallpaper. Even its use has changed: no longer is it just for walls. It can be used on lampshades, on stair risers, framed, to line closests, shelves, drawers, etc. It's no longer your ordinary grandma's wallpaper and in fact, we even use that for a tag line!
