If you don't like the look of bookcases with actual books, filling them with vases, plates, plants and other collected trinkets is a great option. Symmetry is nice, but it certainly isn't mandatory.
For the look of bookcases without the construction, fake it with bookcase wallpaper. This Brunschwig & Fils Bibliotheque wallpaper has always been a favorite of ours for half baths, libraries and any other small nook that's difficult to decorate.
