Surrounding yourself with all the items you love is one of the most fun things about any interior design project. Finding a chic way to display trinkets or store extras can be a bit more challenging. For creating a custom look, we love using an étagère, a beautiful unit that Webster's defines as "a piece of furniture having a number of unenclosed shelves or stages, one above another." The 1913 edition adds that the étagère is designed "for receiving articles of elegance or use." We couldn't have said it better ourselves. Here are just a few ways we love to use this classic piece.

One of the best things about étagères is how incredibly versatile they are. It's easy to simply accessorize them with a few favorite things, but while you're at it, why not make your étagère functional as well? One of our favorite uses is as a well-stocked bar for entertaining. With plenty of room for glasses, liquor, ice buckets and cocktail napkins, guests can be served in style.

For creating chic office storage, nothing beats an étagère. Books, photos or even neatly labeled binders slide nicely onto shelves. Pretty baskets or unique boxes are perfect places for paperwork, extra printer cartridges and other odds and ends. Plus, if you're working in a small space, the open sides of an étagère are much more pleasing to the eye than a solid bookshelf or cabinet.

For outdoor entertaining that really makes a statement, an étagère is a must. Materials like wrought iron or other metals that are weather proof make upkeep a breeze. Plus, changing the color is simply a spray away. One great use: Keep herbs or spices right at your back door but away from the prying mouths of neighborhood animals.

In a bathroom, rows and rows of fluffy, clean, white towels make an excellent accessory, and étagères come in all shapes and sizes, so there's one that's perfect for even the smallest nook.

Fine Art & Portraits by Laurel The final example is a stunning photograph, but what is it, Christo's house? Nah, I know it's a showroom. Aren't we only supposed to show residential interiors here? I'm longing, and looking, for a small glass-enclosed etagere, to display an antique chess set.
