Thanksgiving Dinner: Seat Everyone Together

Thanksgiving has got me thinking about dining rooms designed to comfortably seat large groups. I've always dreamed of living in a home with a dining room large enough to hold a banquet-sized table. Imagine having all the family for Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner and seating everyone at one table! Let's see how it's done:
This table seats 14 with ease and definitely qualifies as a banquet-sized table. When you have a table this long, and if budget allows, hang two chandeliers above. One would look a bit lost over a table of this size. I can just see a second one peeking out behind this one.
Though we can't see the full length of this traditional-style dining table, we can tell that it would easily accommodate 10 for a Thanksgiving feast.
With softly painted furniture and light stained woods, this dining room could easily be found in a home in Belgium or Sweden. The table coverings are linen and are simple but very beautiful on this table that could easily seat 10.
Invite 10 for an ocean side dinner in beautiful Hawaii. It won't matter if the turkey is a little dry and the dressing slightly burnt—everyone will be much too busy gazing out at the magnificent view to notice.
Robert Brown and Todd Davis designed this gorgeous dining room. It will seat 12 for dinner in its current configuration. There are additional chairs around the perimeter of the room which indicates it will seat even more for formal dinners at this residence in the British Embassy.
This dining room banishes the myth that you have to have a fancy, expensive table to seat everyone for Thanksgiving or Christmas. I love how the chairs do not match. This table could easily accomodate 12-14 for dinner. And with a chandelier like that, no one will even be looking at the furniture! Gorgeous.
Large dining rooms with long tables definitely benefit from a little extra lighting. Three fixtures beautifully illuminate this generously sized table with seating for 10.
This sleek, contemporary dining room almost has the feel of a conference room. The chairs are spread out but this table could serve 14 for dinner with ease. With a glass table, you'll definitely need a large dining space since the table size can't be reduced by removing a few leaves.
With seating for 5 down each side and a chair on each end, this large trestle style table will comfortably hold 12 hungry friends and family for dinner. Instead of hanging two or more chandeliers overhead, one large, candlelit fixture provides all the ambience you need for any holiday dinner.
Dining tables don't have to be rectangular to seat a big group. If these chairs were pushed a bit closer together, you could seat 8-9 at this oval table.
When you aren't using all the spaces at your large dining room table, the extra chairs look great placed around the room. This dining room table in its current configuration will seat 12 for dinner. But, since we can see 13 chairs, I wouldn't be surprised if there are additional leaves that can be added when needed.

With its generous size, this dining room was definitely designed for entertaining or for those special dinners with extended family and friends.

Debbie For special occasions, we would "switch" our living room and our dining room to accommodate our table with all its leaves. Unfortunately, we didn't have a chandelier over the table and so would rely on candles. Here's a shot from a 50th birthday party (with 50 candles).

Becky Harris Happy Thanksgiving Susan! So much fun to remember our old Family Thanksgiving (25 people) Dinners after seeing this ideabook; I hope we have groups that big again someday soon (we're down to about 12).

I also like this ideabook because these tables don't relegate anyone to the kid's table :)

carol_klein Happy Thanksgiving! I agree with Becky: kids love to be included at the big table.

We recently enclosed our back porch--almost all glass, turning it into our dining room and, when we're not dining, everyone's favorite spot to work at their computers. A church pew serves as a bench against the brick (previously outside) wall, providing expandable seating. Around the other three sides of the table, we have regular dining room chairs. Narrower occasional chairs throughout the house are ready to move into the dining room as needed. My next project is to improve the outside lighting so that interesting spotlights on trees, for example, replace the current dead darkness and provide the same sense of expansiveness that we have during the day. We look out at our woods, so I also need to do some tidying of the wood's edge, to create a prettier vista. It's fun on a rainy Thanksgiving day (with my pies and cookies baked and cooling) to think about projects.

Between Naps on the Porch Carol...that sounds delightful! Your view sounds amazing. I love uplighting for trees. It will be magical dining in that room with the trees all lit up. Your room makes me think of Bunny William's conservatory where she hosts wonderful dinner parties. :)
