How to Make The Space Around a Fireplace Cozy

A fireplace automatically adds warmth to a room and not just in the physical sense but also in the emotional ambience of the space. However, a fireplace alone doesn't bring true comfort into your home. You need to add a few design and decor tricks to the space around the fireplace to truly make it cozy.

The good thing is that it's not at all hard to turn a fireplace into a really luxurious and warm part of any room. A few simple pillows, the right artwork, the correct placement of furniture around the fireplace ... these little things can really add up to a warm house.

The key to designing around a fireplace is really to think about what would make a group want to gather together. Comfortable furniture and welcoming colors are examples of things that draw people into a space. Of course, the fire will probably get them there anyway but these little extra things will be what truly fill your home with warmth.
There are two things here that make the area around the fireplace cozy. One is that there is a big seating area which has been adorned with a pillow. This invites you to curl up right next to the fire to read a book or just to watch the dance of the flames. The other thing here is the shelf of framed artwork above the fireplace. Checking it out gives you an excuse to come closer to the fire to keep warm.

When putting furniture around a fireplace, it's always ideal to put some chairs as close to the fireplace as it is safe for them to go. This highlights the fireplace as a central part of the room's design and also draws people towards it so that it's included in the life of the home.

The thing that is terrific about this fireplace is that it has a built-in area for you to keep the logs for the fire. This really adds to the charm of the fireplace. The logs themselves form a sort of structural artwork in the wall. And the fact that you can actually see the wood that will be used to create the fire makes you feel so much more in touch with the natural elements than you would be if the wood was hidden away until it was used.

Wooden furniture is a really great choice to go with when you're trying to select pieces to go in a room with a fireplace. That's because it enhances the rustic feeling that a fireplace naturally creates. The addition here of the great wood beam ceilings really makes you feel almost as though you're living in a modern log cabin.

What I love here is how you can have a hodgepodge of different furniture and yet it comes together well because it's focused around the fireplace. The table serves as the main decor piece. Can't you just picture kids sitting around that table playing cards or board games while parent sit on the mismatched furniture and chat? It seems perfectly cozy but without the fireplace it just wouldn't be the same, would it?

If you do like matching decor, however, that can certainly be done around a fireplace. The trick here is to create the layout of the room without regard to the fireplace at first. Here we see a blue-and-white themed seating area enhanced with a rug and decorations of the same color. Then just bring those tones into the fireplace area (as was done with the ceramic pot here) and you've got yourself a cozy design with a fireplace to boot.

If you want a really opulent room then it's best to go with a simple fireplace. Here there is a bit of ornate design in the fireplace but it doesn't stand out too much because of its simple white color. This allows the rest of the room to be the focus of the warmth with its red hues and many textiles.

In some cases, less really is more. Here is an example of how the fireplace serves as a true centerpiece for the room. With very little furniture and just a room filled with books and flames, you can really just let yourself escape into your own imagination.

It's rare to see a fireplace against a glass wall like this but it's a neat design format that should be considered if it's possible. Just picture reading a book by this fire while snow falls outside and you can see how romantic and cozy you'll feel with a design like this one.

This is a terrific example of how a fireplace doesn't have to be the center of a room's design to add warmth to the area. Here we can give attention to the artwork, the shelving units, the plant life and the furniture. And yet everything is situated in such a way as to make it possible to experience the warmth of the fire from anywhere in the room. It's cute and it's cozy.

It's important to note that a fireplace can be cozy and warm even if it's not functional. Here we see how art work and plant life have been set inside the fireplace as though it's almost a frame. The fire-orange window seat and comfortable chair here enhance the coziness of the area so that you don't feel like the place is sterile and cold just because the fireplace doesn't work.
