Design Trends for 2010: "Harvest" (4 comments)
This is the image I used to capture the Harvest trend in the original design trends ideabook. I love it because I think it captures so many elements of the trend. The furniture looks comfortable, but not scruffy, with enough room for a whole family to gather on the sofas and snuggle under the blanket.

This table is so inviting, and I love the way it brings a rustic element to a crisper kitchen.

This mix of elements - family photos, pillows, books, natural light - proves that "Harvest" is perfect for small spaces.

This outdoor seating area screams "community" to me. I imagine that the people in this house constantly have neighbors dropping in for a glass of wine, taking family to a broader level.

I looked very hard for a kitchen with a sofa in it, but couldn't find one anywhere. These comfy chairs, positioned between the dining room and kitchen, serve something of the same purpose. They bring everyone in the house together, even if they're busy doing different activities. Someone's in the kitchen cooking, someone else is curled up reading, and the kids are at the table doing homework - it's a great picture.

I love the chaise in this corner of the room - it serves a purpose similar to those chairs above.

The cool colors in this room fit with James' definition of "harvest" and the vibe reflects the wholesome/ sophisticated mix of the look.

This is a more modern take on the trend as a whole. I especially like the way the duvet cover melds warmth and crisp white.

This room captures all the cool white and neutral elements of the trend, plus the addition of a chaise makes the room inviting. The individual elements are formal, but the bed looks so comfortable that the overall look is softened.

It's funny, I was talking to a friend about the environment and the economy today and I said "I think the only solution is to go back and live like they did on 'Little House on the Prarie.'" This ideabook kind of reminds me of that. Oh, and it was always my dream to live like Laura Ingalls Wilder when I was a kid and had not discovered the spa yet!

I was really excited to see this ideabook because I was excited when I read this trend in your previous post. I really think "harvest" describes the look I'm trying to create in my own home. Previously I had been describing it as a sort of 'modern farmhouse'...elements of rustic comfort blended with some more modern touches, but not too primitive or country (no offense to people who love those styles!). I found these photos on the Ethan Allen website in their find your style quiz and I think they exemplify a bit of this style too. Do you think so?

I was into the trend and I wasn't even aware of it! When we extended our kitchen we created a nook. We placed a small sofa and side table in it and filled it with paintings done by my mother-in-law. It is all about family and creating space to gather. We entertain our friends a lot (they are our extended family) and the adults always end up in the kitchen. We just decided to make everyone more comfortable.

I love all the additional pictures!
I think this is a great example of a trend people gravitate towards without even realizing they're "on trend." It's so natural.
