Sometimes the options for fireplace design seem absolutely limitless. A few weeks ago I started an ideabook about surrounding the fireplace with texture and realized that tile fireplace surround needed an ideabook of its own, as it is an entire subcategory with endless options. Here are some of the choices Houzz designers have settled upon:

S Interior Design Great post about fireplace surround tiles. I love a beautiful and unexpected fireplace surround and hearth. I am having a dual sided fireplace surround and hearth covered in a beautiful sea foam and blue glass mosaic tile and can't wait to see the finished product!

Neil Graham Looking at those fireplaces brings me back to a fireplace we built a few years ago. It was made out limestone. The hearth was 12' wide and went 14' to the ceiling of the home. The limestones varied from 6"-20"in length, 4"+- thick and 4"-8" deep. Unlike cultured, this was all hand chiseled, random pieces, attached with a small amount of mortar, no grouting afterwards. Each row perfectly level. The mantel was 8' wide x 3" thick, held by the weight of the stones stacked above. A small 50" area blocked out for a plasma TV. Last was the 2' bench in front. What was almost as impressive as the fireplace itself, was the 4 days of hand-chiseling the stones to make it. I wish I had that picture to show you. http://www.dimensionbuildlv.com

jeg700 700 I would like to see and idea book about freestanding wood stoves...I have a tiny one in a corner of a tiny living room but I am lacking practical inspiration...every idea I've had so far to add beauty cannot take the intense heat factor.

debrajwalker We surrounded our fireplace insert in travertine. The first fire we had caused resin to raise from the knot in the mantle directly above the fireplace. We set this homemade baffle atop the fireplace and the problem was solved.

lizzyanne Our gas fireplace surround right now is a black metal surface that warms up and throws heat into the room. Does anyone know if that can be tiled over?

Becky Harris Lizzyanne, I would be sure to check with an insured fireplace company (the ones that can covert them to gas, sweep the chimney, etc.). There's no aesthetic worth risking safety for unless you are absolutely positive it's safe! Don't just trust advice on the internet for this one!
