When discussing native art, the word traditional might come to mind. However, contemporary first-nations art dealer Douglas Reynolds of the Douglas Reynolds Gallery shows how well the historic art form fits into modern settings. This summer he plans to host an exhibition titled Modern Edge, which will showcase the evolution of Northwest coastal design. At home, his contemporary décor blends seamlessly with his personal art collection.
Reynolds sold his previous condo unexpectedly, and the purchaser wanted most of the furnishings, so Reynolds started his house hunt with a clean slate. The first property he looked at was love at first sight. Reynolds says, "I knew I wanted it the moment I walked in, and have had no regrets since."

"I like comfort, I like modern furnishings and I hate clutter, at least for this house," says Reynolds. He just finished renovating and refurnishing another property in Mexico and says, "If you compare Vancouver to my house in Mexico, you would think they were owned by two different people. Everything in Mexico revolves around frescos on the ceilings and heavy ornate furnishings and drapes. Although the places are very different, they are both very comfortable to be in."

One of Reynolds' latest art pieces is Gunarh and Whale, a bronze sculpture by Don Yeomans. "I always feared a houseguest was going to knock their head on the underside of the staircase," Reynolds says of the sculpture's placement.

Kelly Deck designed the space. "I met Kelly socially a year or two before we started the renovations on my condo, and we worked together in designing the space," Reynolds says. "In my bedroom, I told her I wanted a low bed with a headboard that ran the length of the wall. I wanted the bed to be floating with lights lifting it off the floor. Kelly took that idea, designed the bed frame and suggested we pad the wall to finish off the look."

Outdoor space was a priority but Reynolds had no idea he would find a condo with so much of it. Since he entertains often, he took full advantage of the private rooftop and gave it a makeover. The pergola was customized with glass to weatherproof the lounge area, and a built-in barbecue pit and bar area were added.

A remarkable white raven sculpture by Jim Hart graces the back patio off the master bedroom. Reynolds considers this one of his most important pieces. Hart is one of the Northwest coast's most accomplished Haida artists; his work can be found in collections throughout the world and is valued for its beauty, integrity and innovation.

| With plants, an outdoor fireplace, furniture and lighting added, the rooftop became an enviable, fully livable outdoor space, rain or shine. Reynolds says, "Even though I am surrounded by high-rises, when you are sitting in front of the fireplace on the roof, it seems very private." Reynolds told himself that this renovation would be it for awhile, but just last week, he started to discuss a new project with his contractor. The plan is to tear off the front of his gallery and rebuild it, giving it a modern edge. "I think the modern facade I have in mind will make an impact to the South Granville area of Vancouver," Reynolds says, "and will tie into the modern artwork I carry and juxtapose the historic."
