Design Trends for 2010: "Odyssey" (3 comments)

This is the photo I originally used to depict this trend. I really like the way the modern plastic mixes with the rococo elements of the mirror and chandelier. It's not exactly Star Wars, but it definitely has a modern/trad vibe.

This chair typifies the look for me. The shape is modern, but the material is as old as it gets.

I love the way this deck incorporates translucent material - literally combining nature with technology.

The midcentury look - which this has in spades, thanks to the mod shapes of the chair and light - will always have that "future" feel. They're the "curves" to which Danielle James refers.

Yes, we have had the discussion about above-the-counter sinks. But these clear, square bowls really work with the counter, don't they? They're a new twist on that old trend.

A vaguely mid-century door in wood + cool frosted panels=an entryway full of "Odyssey."

More of those frosted panels - this time used inside. I really like the way they unobtrusively divide the space. Plus, the material itself is so futuristic and it's a great match for "nature" right outside those amazing windows.

Sleek modern minimalism, windows with sweeping views, a little bit of "nature" with that crazy chandelier - this room has all the elements.

This space is sort of cheeky (the rug), a lot modern (the shapes), and a little natural (the wood behind the bed).

To me, clear plastic or glass is the most futuristic of all the materials. I love the way these clear legs work with the Pucci-esque chairs.

This is the third in a series of ideabooks that go into more detail about trends I highlighted in an earlier ideabook called 10 big design trends for 2010. Most of the trends focused on designing with relationships in mind, incorporating story-laden items into home design, and other very human-oriented trends.

One trend, however, was completely different from the rest, so obviously I was drawn towards that one. That trend is "Odyssey."

UK design expert Danielle James is the one who coined the term, and this is how she describes the trend:

"Futuristic. Natural. Think Star Wars - especially the most recently made sequels, where the women’s costumes were exquisitely sculptured, structured and feminine. How this translates into interiors will be via the emergence of interesting futuristic sculptural curves and smaller areas where there is much attention to ornate detail. However, there will be a space-age edge to all this. The ‘natural’ part of this will be that metallics will be textured and/or combined with natural fibers. I’m talking here of a trend that is a celebration of the beauty of the natural world in an ultra contemporary context."

I'm fascinated with using new and unusual materials as a part of home design - that's my big takeway here - and with the combination of "natural" and "futuristic."

These spaces typify this:

So interesting - I had not heard about "Odyssey" but your pictures have really helped me figure out what you were referring to. I love all the clear things - the balcony, the chairs, the windows. Clear items always make it feel like there is more space, something most of us really need!
While I was working on this, I reread your ideabook on clear things. I love them, too. I was just looking at an old Domino that includes a kitchen with a super rustic table + the Louis Ghost chairs. It's a really cool mix and extra perfect because the kitchen in question was tiny.
