Royal blue accent
A stack of vintage quilts makes for a charming display, especially when arranged in an antique cabinet, and when next to a favourite chair.
If you need to tame your chaotic home office into a more ordered haven, consider this creative method. Label your files from the outside, and you’ll add style, a sense of fun and a new level of organisation all at the same time.
Home offices are all about work and getting things done, and are therefore well suited to an industrial look. Find a metallic or rustic black filing cabinet and you’re one step further to creating a work space with this kind of edge. Next steps? A chair and desk that sing along with it. Think leather, aged timber and function over form.
Packed up Portable, expandable filing systems are just as functional as those in more substantial filing cabinets, but their real advantage is that they can be stashed away out of sight. These old suitcases could hold all your important papers but in fabulous eclectic style.
Designate bags or boxes for removal We have a bag for library books, but I use paper bags for charity and book shops. Only sometimes do I label them, which requires double checking and makes it impossible for my husband to make a run to the charity shop without my oversight. For the books, I’m going to buy a couple of canvas bags: one to hang on a hook in the utility room and one to sit on the table outside our pantry.
Turn storage into display A more budget-friendly version, however, could easily be achieved by repurposing an old bookcase, turning it into useful storage to both hold and display favourite bags and accessories. If you have any knee-high boots, removing the bottom shelf should allow you to accommodate them.
Custom-built shelving is great, but if it’s out of the budget, opt for shelves that can easily change height. This way you can have different heights according to what you’re storing in there. Take your cue from this image, where the owner maximises their space by grouping items of similar height and storing them on shelves just large enough to fit them.
Tailor to your tastes The emphasis in this walk-in wardrobe is on shoe and bag storage, to accommodate the owner’s collection of both. Shelves are designed to just the right height to fit the highest heels, while deep pegs can hold a couple of handbags each.

There is no rule that says serious storage needs to look sensible, too! So use bright paint on woodwork, add patterned carpet and include a decorative bench, too, for a space that’s as personal as the clothes it houses.
Leather: Leather looks stunning alongside rich, autumnal fabrics like tweed, velvet and rustic, nubby linen. If you have a full set of leather furniture, consider breaking it up and using just one or two of the leather pieces, paired with something upholstered in one of these delicious fabrics — the leather will look the richer for it.
Leather: Lighten up a leather sofa or furniture set by surrounding it with soft, warm neutrals, like ivory, cream, sand, beige, wheat and gold. Try crisp white walls, a faded traditional or pale natural-fiber rug, woven shades and creamy linen throw pillows.
