When I was a kid my grandmother gave us her old piano. It still sits in my parents' living room today. Sometimes it's an eyesore and sometimes it's a magical part of their decor. It really depends what else is going on in the room at the time.
Our piano is a wooden piano. This is good for their house because my father is a woodworker and there are many wooden touches throughout the room. This helps tie the whole space together and to give it a cohesive look.
If I were going to purchase my own piano, I would probably choose a black design. This goes well in almost any room. Besides, I love decorating in black and white and the black-and-white of the piano would make this an ideal part of the room's design for me.
Regardless of the type of piano that you have, it can be tough to decorate around it. It's a large piece so you might want to make it the centerpiece of the room. However you may want to be able to integrate it into a multi-purpose space. Learning some basic design tricks can help you to do that.

One smart rule to follow is to keep a mostly black-and-white design around the piano but to add bursts of color somewhere in the room. I happen to think that there's a bit too much color in this one. However, some bold black-and-white prints on the wall would balance this room out perfectly.
Here's an example of the way that black and white colors really work with a piano. The black tile on the wall here provides a great accent to the room and brings it together with the shine black of the instrument.

Consider putting your piano in a room with tile floors. Most people stick their pianos on top of carpet. However a tile floor gives a more formal presentation to the playing of music on the piano.
If a tile room is too cold for you then a room like this would be a great compromise. You still get the great tile effect. However the fluffy rugs make the room cozy and warm - perfect for sitting on while enjoying the music.

If you don't already have a piano then you will want to think carefully about the design of the one that you choose. Many people get a traditional black piano. However a wooden piano or a piano with a unique shape might better suit your existing decor.
