Chartreuse: Love It or Hate It?
Try a Sip of Yellow-Green With Blue, Chocolate, Hot Pink, Eggplant and Teal
Chartreuse may be one of those love it or hate it colors. It is a combination of yellow and green and gets its name from a French liquer. Undeniably bright, it screams "Look at me!" and packs a lot of punch. When I first discovered chartreuse many years ago, I would run the other way. Now, I love it in small doses and subdued tones and think it adds personality and pizzazz to a space. Here's how some talented Houzz designers use this color to add excitement to their rooms:
A chartreuse daybed takes center stage in this modern minimalist kitchen, with clear coordinating chairs the supporting cast. The charcoal gray cabinets in a vertical grain wood ground the kitchen and provide a nice contrast to the chartreuse.
The muted chartreuse ottoman bench and a few accessories add just the right amount of brightness to this fun and sophisticated living space.
The white headboard, paint and accessories add crispness and provide a welcome relief to the strong chartreuse accent wall. The prints in the bedding and throw pillows marry the two colors and buttery yellow adds some interest.
Tip: When choosing a color scheme, select one dominant color, a secondary color and a third accent color. In this case, it's chartreuse, white and yellow.
This living area is island colorful in a restrained kind of way. With just a touch of the quietest chartreuse, it is a place you want to spend time in. Isn't it beautiful with eggplant, taupe and teal?
Pillows are an easy way to try out chartreuse. In this bedroom, it provides a punch of color. Notice how well it works with the espresso in the hardwood floor, coverlet, chair and mirror frames.
I am intrigued by this front door. Chartreuse really stands out when it is surrounded by light gray with white trim.
Here is the view from inside.
Chartreuse also looks great with blue tones. In this living area, a modern icon, the Womb Chair by Eero Saarinen, wears chartreuse in front of gray with a hint of blue.
Here it is with a light blue gray.
And a soft sky blue with splashes of orange.
