Kitchen of the Week: Smart, Elegant Atlanta Addition
Controlling traffic flow and conquering clutter topped the priorities list for this 1980s-era Georgia kitchen
This clean and elegant Atlanta kitchen was originally a big '80s-style mess. The original kitchen was poorly laid out, had the standard '80s finishing and was riddled with poor construction. The homeowner wanted not only to update the kitchen's style but to create a space that would allow for cooking and entertaining without disrupting traffic flow.
By adding a small addition to one side of the kitchen and reframing a portion of the space, Renewal Design-Build created enough room for extra living space, storage and cooking.

| Smooth functionality was the priority for this remodel. Wiring, windows and poor structural supports were just a few of the things that needed to be replaced. Once the kitchen had been brought up to code, Renewal Design-Build created a number of floor plans for the homeowner to consider, all of which allowed for casual dining, plenty of storage and a clear entry and exit to the yard. This particular layout has several activity zones designed to control traffic flow in the kitchen. | Small organizational details make a big difference. The handy shelf behind the range, for example, frees up valuable inches of counter space. Backsplash and island countertops: Sienna silver travertine, Walker Zanger; perimeter countertop: Radianz Everest white quartz; stove: Wolf 30-inch |

This soft green-blue cabinet is where Renewal Design-Build placed the coffee and tea station for the family. A small nook built into the cabinetry keeps it out of the way from the kitchen's main prep and cooking areas.
The homeowner's art, furniture and china helped determine this soft shade of green, which keeps the kitchen's otherwise gray palette from feeling too cold.

| The homeowner wanted the kitchen to have clearer access to the outdoors, so Renewal Design-Build added two new entries and exits. The team made sure that the doorways were separated from the main part of the kitchen to control traffic flow. A drop-off station for keys and other odds and ends keeps items from filtering into the kitchen. Around the corner, shallow but wide pantries make the most out of limited space. |

| Initially, there were structural details with the soffits and ceiling height changes from the original addition that the team had to deal with. But by adding molding in different depths, they were able to create a beautiful focal point. A ceiling bump-out for the sofa and a few feet of floor area for the dining table made a huge difference in the space's functionality. "You don't always have to do big additions to get a great kitchen," says Heather Shuster, project development director at Renewal Design-Build. "Focused zones and smart storage can make a beautiful and functional space." The team only added a little square footage here (less than 12 square feet), but it made a huge difference in the layout and flow. bjcohan Not only bad wine storage, but that shelf over the cooktop is impractical. Whatever is on it will invariably get in the way, get splashed upon, and be a pain to keep clean. This is a nice kitchen for people who don't cook!

ragsangle The nook area where the dishwasher is looks a little tight , I don't drink wine but everything I read says it's suppose to be cold to drink so I'm quite sure about that. This kitchen is a little confusing to me, it would be difficult to cook in I think.Too many nooks and crannies, too many impractical spaces...it's just confusing.

vpierce That shelf over the stove looks like a fire waiting to happen....plus, who would store oil that close to heat?

ebea Love the look of the backsplash. I believe the wine is next to the microwave. Not a major source of heat. I like that the microwave is raised yet not up so high as to be inaccessible. Love the hardwood floor too. All in all, pretty neat kitchen.

martineayers I wouldn't be very happy to have my hardwood floors transition right in the middle of my kitchen. The island seems to have been delivered to the wrong kitchen.

ersiebay The look is lovely but it also looks like a pain to actually cook in this kitchen. That nook near the fridge??? Every door opens into each other...the freezer door, 4 cabinet drawers and and a couple cabinet doors...for what you probably invested i hope it was a lot worse before

ae2ga Of all of the giant sized, impractical-for-most-people kitchens on this site, I'm really thrilled to see not only a real kitchen, but a real kitchen for "regular" people that's both functional and very pretty. Petty complaints and nit=picking aside, this is a great kitchen. Vanessa, I sincerely hope you continue to provide examples of kitchens, indeed whole houses, like these. Thank you SO MUCH.

avirgl Wow, just read all of the comments below, great comments, guys. I wasn't looking at things from a practical standpoint, just from the 'look' and you all addressed issues that are important, but obviously not caught right away. Getting ready to remodel my kitchen and I will think about these comments when planning out my space!

wenmill I really like the wine storage space. It's good for someone like me who does not drink, but would like a small space to keep a few bottles on hand for guests. But, as others suggested, I wouldn't have the microwave or any heat source nearby.
