Five-Panel Doors Unlock Style

keri I haven't had a ton of luck finding these retail in my area- DFW. Any suggestions on sources? My 1930's home has a couple of plain hollow core flat doors I'd like to replace with 5 panel doors- on a budget.

tennisgran Keri, I have been looking for 4 panel doors similar to the above. I have found 5 panels in Jeld-wen and I believe they sell them at Lowe's or Home Depot.

Crown MDF Doors combine the very best of authentic stile and rail craftsmanship with MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) technology. They are less expensive than an entirely solid wood door too. You may also want to check out a local salvage yard like Rejuvenation in Portland.

suedee Years ago, a friend was building a rather grand house with a zillion interior doors. As I admired the paneled doors, she shared a secret on how she stretched the budget: She had used plain luan doors and applied mitered trim to mimic paneled doors. It took attention to detail, caulk and a quality paint job but she had achieved the look she wanted at a fraction of the price.

bluecenturyhome We recently installed 2 sliding closet 5 panel doors in our nursery. We used oil rubbed bronze hardware. Love it! We bought them from Lowe's last year when they were on sale last April.

Futuralon I have a craftsman bungalow with these doors. I like them. I looked all over for a replacement kitchen door to match. We found one at a Habitat for Humanity restore; it has a pane of glass in place of the two top panels, but close enough. We are putting old fashioned solid brass knobs on, as the old brass plated steel is all ruined. Love the look of build-to-last pieces like these doors. Hollow-core doors are so... flimsy.

Susan What a wonderful idea book! We are fortunate to have all the original 5-panel doors in our 1907 home. Some are painted; some are the original dark stain. Love them all! You are so right about them being versatile.

Lynden Door Oh, how we agree! The 5-panel is a classic style that fits well in Craftsman vernacular and can find happiness in more contemporary surroundings, too. Lynden Door makes a true RECESSED flat panel version in a molded door. It is a 'budget-friendly' product (somewhere south of the cost of typical wood stile & rail, north of the average molded door), and its dense surfaces are ideal substrates for paint. Highly stable and hard to distinguish from solid wood doors. The "Conmore" is available hollow-core, solid and fire rated. Green build attributes are possible, although the basic unit starts out with molded facings made of an environmentally intelligent 65% recycled wood fiber, with NO added urea formaldehyde.
