Do you remember how you felt watching Willie Wonka & the Chocolate Factory when Charlie opened the Wonka Bar and you saw the glimmering golden ticket? I feel that way in rooms when gold is used in a small and unexpected way. I feel fancy sitting in a room with delicate touches of gold even when I'm not fancy, which is most of the time.
The late American fashion designer Bill Blass, known for using pattern and texture within a neutral palette, used gold in this way. In his designs he would use an unexpected gold button. In his home he would place a brass fire screen on his hearth that would shimmer with the flames against a neutral palette.
I'm not going to say that gold is back, because I don't think it ever left. Take a look at how these designers are fetching the golden prize in their spaces.

One of my favorite accessories in a while, this golden pachyderm holds its own in this whimsical arrangement.
I think the glimmer of this faucet shows the versatility of gold. Here it is perfectly paired with the cool colors of the wallpaper and the antiqued mirror. Yes, gold and silver do play well together.

Although this is technically not a metallic gold, the lush gold velvet on this settee is brilliantly placed among a variety of colors and textures. If I described this room before you could see it, you would probably say "no way" to its gray walls and hot pink, chartreuse, acrylic and striped rug details — no way could they work together. Way, they can!
I included this picture just because it's so over the top. Gold doors embossed with lions that lead to your own personal movie theater? Why not?

CAROLE MEYER Charmean....congratulations! You have wonderful taste and I always enjoy seeing what you have done. I think you hit on it...using gold in a restrained way can just add the pop to a room that is needed. I have even gotten around to mixing gold and silver as long as both have a mellow look. Anyway, I will look forward to seeing your comments and ideas here on Houzz. Carole

I've always been a gold jewelry/accessory kinda gal, and now my fiance and I, thanks to Charmean's help, have gold touches all throughout our decor in our new home. I agree, adding delicate touches of gold make you feel fancy, even when you're not fancy! Here's my favorite room in our new home. Talk about feeling fancy schmancy!
