Studio Dearborn: How Our Cabinets are Made
This ideabook is designed to give you an in depth look at how our cabinetry is made. All of Studio Dearborn’s cabinetry is produced by one company, because we believe that their quality, value, attention to detail, and customer service is extraordinary! Our cabinetry is fabricated in Amish country in a small rural town in Central Ohio using locally sourced hardwoods. Cabinetry is hand constructed by experienced craftsmen using solid hardwood materials and old world joinery techniques. All cabinetry is fully customizable. We have spent years working together to nuance the specifications for our own line of cabinetry, and we are continuously adding new features and options, and improving upon the old. Please look at our project photos for more images of custom options.
Studio Dearborn cabinetry is hand crafted from local hardwoods by experienced cabinet makers, using traditional furniture joinery techniques.
Hardwood face frames in 4/4 or 5/4 thickness are constructed using mortise and tenon joinery. These face frames are tongue and grooved to the cabinet shelf frames.
Cabinet door frames are solid hardwood construction using coping and mortise and tenon joinery for maximum durability.

The floating hardwood panels rest on silicone discs to allow for shrinkage without cracking. Panel edges are prefinished to insure that no unfinished edges are revealed as wood panels shrink.
Drawers feature 9/16" hardwood sides with dovetail construction.

Drawers and drawer liners can be crafted with contrasting wood trim. On this drawer, walnut was used to trim maple drawer box with silverware organizer.
Hettich soft close ball bearing drawer tracks are used on all drawers and pullout trays. Hidden underneath the drawers, these pulls were voted best in the industry by Fine Homebuilding Magazine.
Wall cabinets have 1" thick sold hardwood adjustable shelves.
Stains are hand rubbed using a multi-step process. The catalyzed Resistorvar II varnish was designed for tabletops, and comes in a variety of finishes. All finishes applied in pressurized, dust free finsh booths.
A custom treatment under the wall cabinets encases the puck lights and plugmold for a completely finished look.
All waste drawers are clad in stainless steel for durability. The top lip of all waste drawers have a stainless or nickel strip, which can also be added anywhere in the kitchen.
Wide drawer frames enhance beauty and strength of the cabinetry. In this kitchen, we designed a narrow frame for the shallow drawers, keeping the deep drawers with wider frames.
Extra wide door frame, custom Studio Dearborn router detail, and flat panel on an inset door lend crisp styling to an otherwise traditional look.
Any combination of panel styles, door styles, beading, and moldings can be used on our cabinets, and sometimes we even vary the door style within the same kitchen. Shown here is a beaded inset door with 3 step door frame detail, raised panel on the appliance garage. All profiles are custom designed by Studio Dearborn in collaboration with our craftsmen.
Custom stain colors are our specialty! Send us a photo or sample, and we can match stains, paints and glazes to achieve the effect you want.
We can build any kind of custom storage, as with this wine storage with custom built in butler's tray.
Custom nickel plated grills add polish to a desk cabinet. Grilles are imported from the UK from Just Grilles, and are available in a variety of finishes, sizes and styles.
Cabinetry is crafted with both beauty and functionality in mind. Here, a drawer was custom sized to fit the client's printer, and interior structural brackets have routered edges.
On this desk unit, cubbies were custom sized for the client's school paperwork, and a bulletin board at the back keeps calendars and important papers handy.
We specialize in custom work! For this customer, who wanted a two door look under her rangetop, we crafted pullout drawers to look like doors.
The contents of your kitchen will be inventoried to insure that there is a place for everything in your new space.
Built ins can be fabricated to slide right into your walls, with custom crafted moldings that can match those existing in your home. Here, a cherry top is stained to match the cabinetry in the adjacent kitchen.
All cabinetry is laid out and designed in CAD shop drawings, so clients can visualize and approve every construction detail prior to ordering.
