I'm currently working on the redesign of my three-year-old son's bedroom. I think I have settled on a nautical theme, but I also want to make sure the room can grow with him and be applicable 10 years from now. Below are my top 20 picks for a seafaring-inspired boy's room that will hopefully age gracefully! — Emma from The Marion House Book
This brass dock light has roots back to the shipyards of 19th century London. It would definitely bring a marine feel to a boy's bedroom and would look great on the wall beside a twin bed.
The story behind these original found Japanese glass fishing floats is so romantic. They traveled the ocean currents for years until a beachcomber discovered them in Alaska. What a great story to tell a little boy!
I'm thinking of finding a secondhand dresser and replacing the knobs with these pliant jute rope handles. They'll immediately make the piece more seaworthy!
I've wanted one of these iconic Noguchi paper lanterns for a while now. This is one of those pieces you will always find a place for in your house and that will last the test of time.
These nautical signal flags would make a great wall decoration. Hang one or two of them on the wall or string a whole bunch of them together like a bunting.
I'm not sure if we have the room for this piece, but it is something that could be hung from the ceiling of the room. I love all the layers of accumulated paint.
artistschmartist Love these ideas, but I have a gentle suggestion: girls like nautical-themed bedrooms, too! It's pretty gender-neutral, actually. I know you're specifically designing for your son, but just putting it out there. It's a great choice for adventurous kids.
At www.printedart.com we have a large selection of nautical-themed photos in sleek, frameless displays. Photography would be a great addition to this type of room. We print is various sizes and mount under acrylic with an aluminum dibond backing for a durable, easy to clean, frameless design. For a matte finish or a more traditional look, we also mount on dibond without acrylic or on stretch canvas.
comicbooklady I think those things would be nice for a guest room but it doesn't seem to have the energy of a 3 year old. I say keep the boat on the floor and set up a dress up station where kids can be pirates and have adventures. I would have a nice collection of wooden boats, too. For an older boy it would be great to havea telescope and globe...I like the map pillows, those are great!
hammondfamily i would check out Hobby Lobby if you have one in your area, you can find all your decorative accents at a reasonable cost (especially when they do their 50% off). I picket up a model sailboat, anchor, life ring and wheel for under $100.00. :)
