I'm almost embarrassed to admit that we bought our house because it has a front porch with square-tapered Craftsman columns. Even though they're wrapped in aluminum and have seen better days, their proportions are so perfect, they make me weak in the knees.
Craftsman style columns are handsome, historical and simple in style. Essential in defining Craftsman or Arts and Crafts–style homes, the squared columns are often paired with other bungalow characteristics, such as deep, overhanging front porches, exposed rafters, gabled rooflines and built-in bookcases. Their perfectly proportioned square taper is guaranteed to add aesthetic value to a home.

kathyj311 I love everything about Craftsman style-but I think some of my favorite aspects are the built-ins and the beams! About a decade ago while we were searching for our home, we looked at one and I instantly fell in love. However, it was already under deposit and we never got a shot at it. We ended up buying a cottage (across the street from a lake, what a nice bonus!) and it does have the same sense of style. I love the vintage/cottage look-maybe someday I will get to own a Craftsman, you never know.

cheryl1 Love Craftsman Bungalows ! We have a small one in Northern Florida. She was pretty yucky when we bought her but we are having fun fixing here up !My favorite thing is to sit on the front porch and watch the world go by. I believe the pillars that are thin on top and wide on the bottom are called elephant legs, makes sense !

avbird My first home was a craftsman bungalow. All the 'traditional' elements of this style appeal to me but I loved most the large foyer, wide wood trim, leaded glass windows and especially the built-ins (window seats, bookshelves and cubbies) and fabulous 12 pane french doors between the foyer and living room and living room/dining room. We are in our third home now, and I still miss that house!! Maybe retirement will once again find me a Craftsman!

dclacy In the older homes the inside columns matched the porch columns in style and details. Small front entry porches came into vogue in the 1920's. It's hard to find an intact Craftsman home that wasn't a victim of post WWII tastes.

kgschifino My first house in Pittsburgh, PA, was a Craftsman style American Foursquare that had all the hallmarks of the style. It was built in 1922 and was about 97% original to 1922 and in amazing condition. It's still being lovingly maintained by the current owners. The front porch had the tapered columns as shown in these photos.

mmsalg I also love the Craftsman style and the columns especially. There are a TON of great ideas here (Houzz is fabulous at content :-) ). Here is a place to check when you need those columns made http://cutm.co/hz/24

Roots and Rafters Craftsman has got to be my favorite style of home. The house we just bought is either a Craftsman that thinks it's a Cape Cod, or a Cape Cod that thinks it's a Craftsman. Outside it looks like a normal Cape, but it was built in 1927 and has beautiful original Craftsman columns and trim on the inside. We're never sure which features to play up.

sgnmft One of the pillars on my front porch began to 'shift' which alerted me to settling below. 3K later a new foundation was supported by pillars sunk to bedrock - and my porch pillars are level again. The Craftsman pillars on my 1921 home in Nashville are one of my favorite details!
