What's in Your Buttery?

I'll bet it’s not butter. If I peered into your modern day “buttery,” I would most likely find boxes of food, canned goods, paper towels, and small appliances…maybe even a broom or mop. In early America, the buttery, predecessor to our modern day pantry and named for the butts of barrels stored there, was a small, unheated room, usually located on the north corner of a home. It was used to store barrels of flour, sugar and other staples needed to feed the large families who lived there.

The buttery, usually a multi-purpose room with unpainted shelves, would have seen its share of butter churning and cheese making…even bread baking. You know, when you think about it, the buttery of yester-year really isn’t that different from our current day pantries. We still store food staples like flour and sugar, only now they’re usually in 5 lb bags as opposed to large barrels.

Did you know the pantry is one of the most oft requested rooms in homes being built today? I’ve decided…the next time I move, I’d like to buy a nice screened-in porch and a big butler’s pantry…that just happens to have a house attached. :)

Whether you’re building a new home or renovating/adding a pantry, here are some fabulous butt’ry features you just might want to include...
traditional kitchen by Gast Architects
When designing a great pantry, think about incorporating both open and closed areas of storage. The open shelving will work well for storing appliances or even for showcasing a beautiful dishware collection.

Pull-out wire or metal bins are great features to include in a pantry. You'll easily be able to see what's stored inside.

This pantry actually has two different styles of pull-out drawers/bins. Note the verticle storage area for cutting boards and tall trays...great idea!
kitchen Marielle
Again, we see a well thought out pantry that includes verticle space for cutting boards and pull out drawers and bins. This pantry even boasts a sunny window...a feature that comes in handy during daylight hours, as well as providing ventilation when needed.
Dream Pantry
Do you store a lot of your food or baking supplies in jars or cannisters? If so, consider adding some shallow shelving to one wall of your pantry. Not only is it functional, it looks great, too!

So, how do you reach those up-high, out-of-reach shelves? If you have the room, tuck a small stepladder up under one of the shelves.

If a step ladder just won't get the job done, go for a rolling "library" ladder. Only, in this case, we'll call it a rolling butt'ry ladder. :)

Even in today's modern interiors, the pantry looks and functions great with both open and closed storage. Wide, shallow drawers work well to store freshly laundered table linens.
Some pantries go a step beyond just providing storage. Since many of the staples needed for baking are stored in the pantry, a baking center makes a nice addition to the modern pantry.

If you have room and access to plumbing, it never hurts to include a nice deep sink for washing extra large pots.

It may just be the pantry, but make it feel special with some pretty lighting. Love the leaded glass feature above the doorway.

Ahhh, the spare refrigerator...we all love and want one, but who wants to hike down to the basement or out to the garage when you need more ice or cold drinks for the party? The pantry makes a fab spot to tuck away an overflow frig. A little stool will give you a cozy place to sit as you plot the week's menu or grocery list.
contemporary kitchen by David Favero
This may be my most fav feature of all...just because its so unexpected and plain cool. Do you see it...the little doorway in the backsplash area? If the layout allows, how about a pass-through opening from the dining room into the butler's pantry. In this layout, the kitchen is located on the other side...just through the doorway. I love this idea! It sure would save a lot of walking, especially with a dishwasher built into this space.

So, tell me...what's in your buttery...besides food and stuff? :) Any neat little features that are must haves for the well-stocked pantry?

Rough Linen Now you have made me hungry.
I once had an old house with a separate tiny room for every conceivable function - scullery, laundry, boiler room, pantry, linens store - and it was difficult sometimes. I have just about recovered to the point that I would like a pantry, with marble counter, tiny window, high ceiling and north exposure....sounds a bit like a buttery!

entertainingwomen I've always thought that I would be really happy with the White House china room, but the buttery has a lot to offer, too! Thanks for sharing the ideas. Cherry Kay

Between Naps on the Porch Me too, Becky!
Tricia...sounds like some amazing storage in your old house! What was the difficult part? Was it the cleaning? I love the older homes.
Cherry Kay...thanks for stopping by! :)

giuditta127 I still yearn for my Nonna's wonderful pantry, and I'd love to recreate it someday. For those of us who nest, a pantry is the ultimate comfort...and joy!

Another great collection, Susan --thanks.

adele gargano Thanks Susan, I also had never heard of a buttery, but have always wanted a walk in pantry. Have had to settle for wire shelving in the basement which has been a great help with extra food, dishes, small appliances and serving pieces. The pictures are wonderful, and having a large pantry will absolutely be high on my list in my next home.

Linda Green Hi Susan, I have a pantry now which holds all the food, spices and baking supplies, large baskets and baking pans. However, I have been seriously thinking of changing it into a dish cupboard and moving the food to the kitchen cabinets. There is something inspiring about opening one door and seeing all the offerings! I really need 2 pantries and less cabinets. But what I need even more are those gorgeous shallow drawers for linens! Thanks for a great ideabook! Linda (MoreFunLessLaundry)

ahrisha Hi Susan~ ~ ~I have not heard the word Buttery before but I think I like it better than pantry. Has a nice ring to it. I would adore one of these great big rooms for storage with a baking area too. I have a small closet similar to yours and I keep looking at it and thinking I must pull everything out and paint the walls a cheery color. There is a fellow blogger that has the most amazing pantry I have ever seen in the center of her kitchen. It is about 8x8 and has a screened door and a baking area inside. When I locate her again I'll let you know.

Kathy Casey I love the word "buttery", I never heard that word used before. The photos have some great ideas. Our new house is just finished and we are designing the pantry/buttery this week, what a big help and inspiration, thanks!

rileysgranny My sweet husband built me a 12' x 4' walk in pantry for Christmas last year by bumping out into the entry. The walls are beaded board and there is storage on deep shelves behind the door when it's opened, for items used during the holidays and my canning equipment and jars. The long wall has narrow shelves for canned goods and other food items and I've started buying storage jars to put my cereals, dried beans, etc. in - it makes everything look so neat and organized. On the 4' wall to the right he built me a wrapping station with hooks for hanging gift bags and tension rods for rolls of wrapping paper. It's so nice to have everything I need for gift wrapping in one place. And there are hooks in there for my aprons and grocery bags, room for my broom, mop and dust pan and even enough space for 3 tall trash cans I use for my recyclables.

JEANIE Well. I now have two choices: move to a house with a buttery or build on. This was the most fun ever! Very inspiring and may have caused me to actually salivate!

Judy I don't have a pantry, but would love one! What I also would love to find out is how to keep it cool in the summer? I live in Australia, so it gets pretty hot, and whenever I have groceries that demand to be kept in a "cool, dry place" I have no idea what to do with it. Maybe, one should get a pantry with air-conditioning? :-)

shabbycottage I've got a pantry and it desperately needs reorganizing.... and so do my kitchen cupboards. I think I need to make my weekend project working in the pantry after the inspiration you just provided.

Ahrisha, if you ever find that center-of-the-kitchen pantry blog again, I'd LOVE to see that pantry. My mind is already creating it!

Denise Posey Hi Susan! Love the pics. I live in a 1915 Craftman's Bungalow, it has both, a pantry and butler's pantry. When we bought the house I had to explain about the butler's pantry, no one in my family had ever heard of one. I have dishes and linens in there and in the pantry, which is about 5' x 8', I have mostly food items, but also some dishes. I always say, it is my FAVORITE room in the house!

Kathy Gray Designs We have a nice 5'0" x 10'0" walk in pantry. I enjoy the open shelving so much that have empty cabinets in my kitchen as I prefer the open shelving. The down size is we often leave the pantry door open and the view was not pretty. Solved that by storing by antique china, crystal, etc. on the shelving directly in front of the door opening. Now I enjoy seeing the china...which was tucked away in the china closet and seen a few times a year.

David Favero Susan, You will be happy to know that the very cool, last pantry on your list is in....yes, Atlanta. You spotted the coolest features here: The double pass through door from kitchen into butler's pantry. We put in a warming drawer and lots of storage with a calacutta sink. The door to the right does go straight into the dining room. The idea was to have the "cooks in the kitchen" passing to the servers into the dining room. It was incredible and I only wish I had room to show the light fixtures, book shelves and ladder.

I am glad you called it out. It deserves it.
