Beautiful Details: Wainscoting and Paneled Walls

I don't know why you couldn't paint it. If you are referring to paneling from the 60's/70's, I think the hardest part would be to make sure the recessed lines between the panels get painted. Would just required a bit of time, I'd make sure to use a good primer prior to painting. Talk to the people at a good paint store for suggestions on the best materials and products to use. I do know Sherwin Williams has a great water based paint that would probably work well in such an application: ProClassics, dries to a harder finish similar to an oil based paint.

We are in process of painting our ensuite bath which has new beadboard. Since it is a humid environment (only a handheld showerhead for our clawfoot tub), to give the wood more moisture resistance, we were advised to prime with the alkyd/oil enamel, and then top with the latex enamel if we wanted easier application of top coats. The wood is absorbing the primer like a sponge, I expect to apply two gallons in the bath. I am using a brush to cut in, but a medium/rough surface small roller to do the expanse of wall. It is a time consuming effort, but I know it will pay off if I am patient. BTW, our primer is the Kilz alkyd/oil with mildew resistance. Our top coats are Behr Plus Ultra, but I plan to do two top coats regardless of their claims that one coat will do.

A thrifty tip I learned from a professional. But the wood molding pieces directly on the painted wall and then paint wall with a gloss white paint. It looks like it is completely paneled and only those who touch your wall can tell the difference. And they shouldn't be touching your wall anyway!

We used the PVC wainscoting in the bathrooms to avoid the moisture issue and have great ease of cleaning. The moldings are wood.

I love paneling, too. Wainscoting as above or barnboard or even painted old pine panelling add lots of texture to a room.
