This ideabook's discussion of heavy metal will not require you to listen to amplified guitar or wear a ripped tank top. It simply exposes the beauty of metal in interior design, outside of hardware and stainless steel appliances.
This modern aesthetic may appear extreme to some but refreshing to others. Depending on the context, metal can make a space feel industrial, commercialized, cutting edge, or just simply add interest to a room. When paired with natural wood, metal takes on warmer qualities and becomes more livable. What's even more convincing is that using metal in your interior finishes can even prove to be a cost saver. I challenge you to uncover your inner rock star and take a look at how this raw material is changing the face of design.

If the metal look is too unfinished for your taste, it can be painted with a little preparation. Here the focus is more on the color and wavy pattern of the door, versus its sheen.
To clean, start with a solution of chlorinated bleach, warm water and T.S.P followed by a galvanized metal primer. Allow metal to completely dry after each step. Last, apply paint according to manufacturers instructions.

linbar In the mid 70's an old hotel was being torn down in Spokane, WA. I had the opportunity to purchase this iron gate that had been one of two used to enter the hotels bar. It sat outside just waiting for me to decide what to do with it until recently when I decided it would make a great headboard, rust, lichen et al. I think I made the right decision in not having it sandblasted and painted. I love it's rustic elements in contrast to the bedding.
