Mud room/laundry room floor - Two sizes and shades of natural slate make up this handsome mudroom floor. Along the edges are 12-inch-square gray slate tiles, while 3- by 6-inch tiles in a variegated shade fill the middle. The subtle paint shades, White Heron and Grant Beige, are from Benjamin Moore.
Some people mistake the home as being built from a shipping container, but in fact it’s corrugated Cor-Ten siding with a pattern called Western Rib, which is similar to that of shipping containers. It was chosen for its low maintenance — it doesn’t require painting, and the rust gives it a patina that also protects it from the elements - another option for an exterior element. TEXTURE!!!
Hall Smith Office_Architecture Save to Ideabook Email Photo “For years I looked for the perfect woodstove, but the only ones I could find were either too European looking or potbellied models straight out of the general store,” says Smith. “When I found this Shaker-inspired stove with tapered legs, I knew it was the right one.”
Wool Blanket, Grey - $123.75 Inspired by vintage military blankets, these felted-wool blankets have a historic charm and an air of real-world grit. The design features a neutral background with a contrasting colored stripe and matching edge stitching, and is finished off with a white embroidered cross. Strong, textural and functional, this blanket would look great in both industrial and farmhouse settings.
Are those slats on the left side of the house made of metal? Like 1 Comment August 7, 2013 PRO FINNE Architects Hi, Thanks for your question about our Port Ludlow project. The siding on the house is completely maintenance-free metal siding. I used two different profiles and colors to add a more residential feel, since metal siding is often used for industrial buildings. On the left side of the photo, you can see the exterior wall of the house, and then there is a lower, freestanding wall with metal siding that is screening the barbecue unit.
WA designSave to IdeabookEmail Photo Metal Though not a commonly considered material, metal can be an excellent choice for siding —especially if your house has a contemporary aesthetic. From corrugated steel to copper, metal sidings are durable and require little if any, maintenance. OCst varies and you have to find a qualified installer.
Exterior?
Milestone, an integral-colored, cement-based material that goes on smooth for a Venetian-plaster-type finish.
There's been a move of late to a more contemporary aesthetic, especially with interiors — not surprising, as these interiors are more about the quality of the space than about all the objects within that space. Perhaps a reaction to our overcollecting and overdoing of the last few decades, it's a welcome breath of fresh air.
Johnson and McLeod were champing at the bit to start realizing their vision; they began demolishing walls the day they took possession of the house. "As in all of our work, we focus on increasing light and opening up longer sight lines," McLeod says. "To that end we tore down the wall between the kitchen and main living room, creating one huge space."
Impacts the house and garage - Positioning a small portion of the footprint of the overall structure to one side of the courtyard defines the edge without constraining the view or connection to the landscape
Take your time. Great design takes a while and usually requires refining before you come up with the perfect plan for your lifestyle. Don't rush through the design — it's worth taking a little extra time up front to make sure you have a more efficient and functional plan in the end.
Folding. Altering the shape of steel can expand its spanning capability. Similar to the Roman arch, the shape here distributes the loads more efficiently. Because the thin plates comprising this cantilevered stair are folded, they're rigid enough to span large distances.
Galvanizing. Dipping steel in zinc creates a corrosion-resistant layer bonded to the top layer of steel. This mottled gray finish appears more casual, camp-like and unpretentious than other corrosion-resistant options, like stainless steel. The soft gray lines of the stair guard contrast the shadowed reveals of the siding
If you can't make a material change in your space, try using paint for a dramatic effect. Keep the color consistent from ceiling to wall to headboard — here a crisp line defines the sleeping area from the nearby window.

“If there’s any one sweeping statement that can be made about the green building industry, it’s that the truth is in the details.” — Mariana Pickering Green technology and standards are changing every day. Honestly, it’s impossible to stay completely on top of them, but what you can do is try. Get started by bookmarking Pickering’s ideabook so that when the time comes, you’ll have good, solid guidelines for being as green as possible and not being fooled by greenwashing.
“While you’re picking up your Christmas tree, consider also grabbing the scrawniest tree in the lot — it would look adorable on the front porch with a simple burlap skirt and a strand or two of twinkle lights.” — Laura Gaskill I also like the look of this home.
Mulch can make for a simple and attractive path if you’d like something softer under your feet. It’s extremely porous and performs surprisingly well, even after quite a bit of traffic. It’s also inexpensive and easy to maintain on your own.
This is probably the answer I have been looking for with regards to the roof pitch over the porch. It just has to start higher up in order to shed snow. I also love, Love, LOVE the look of the drive and could be easily attainable and managed with my driveway at the lake. I think the secret is to make sure that the grass put down is in a good growing base and it gets plenty of water and is large enough (wide) to make it viable.
Standing-Seam Metal Roof Pros: Extremely durable, long lasting, light reflective and fully recyclable, metal roofs are a great investment for anyone — not just green homeowners. You can ramp up the green factor by choosing a metal roof made with recycled content and in a lighter color. Cons: More expensive than asphalt shingles (though less than copper and slate), a standing-seam metal roof is a bigger investment up front. Also, homeowners in areas with heavy snowfall must include a plan for dealing with snow — it slides right off metal roofs, potentially creating huge drifts around the perimeter of the house
While the initial outlay for a metal roof is more expensive than that of an asphalt shingled roof, a big percentage of the costs can be recouped, especially if you plan on staying in your house for a long time. While asphalt roofs will likely need replacing every 15-20 years, a metal roof can last a lifetime
However, there is a big drawback to using standing seam roofing for areas with harsh winter weather. "It sheds snow, leading to big piles of snow along eave sides and at valleys," Smith warns. "This needs to be taken into consideration when locating entries, walks, and plantings. When we do use standing seam for an entire house, such as this lake house in Vermont, we design to accommodate the snow issues
Very crisp and architectural and much easier to get excited about than asphalt shingles. Other than copper and slate, both very expensive, enameled standing seam roofs have the best longevity. From a long-term maintenance standpoint this is a plus. Additionally, standing seam can be used on low-pitched roofs, where shingles would not be appropriate. We use this material very frequently on porches and dormers, which tend to have lower pitches. Finally, there are some nice color options."
Consider a metal roof. While the cost of a metal roof is significantly higher than a shingled roof, it will likely last a lifetime and it is practically maintenance-free. The practical advantages of a metal roof are that it makes your home safer in harsh weather and can significantly cut down on your energy bills. Aesthetically, a metal roof is versatile in design to complement many architectural styles, from a century old farmhouse to a contemporary home.

Warm wood contrasts nicely with the dark, cool flooring of the kitchen and is an instant visual cue to a room delineation. Notice how the ceiling changes in plane at the same line where the flooring changes.
