Variations of the hand chair created by architect-sculptor Pedro Friedeberg in the 1960s have become an icon, found in rooms on the covers of Metropolitan Home and Elle Decor, in the Austin Powers movies and on TV shows such as Arrested Development and Saturday Night Live. Top interior designers such as Jonathan Adler and Kelly Wearstler, and designer and rocker Lenny Kravitz have added a Friedeberg gilded hand chair to their own rooms.
The idea of sitting in a giant hand is hilarious. The chair can also create a beautiful architectural statement.
Friedeberg has created many variations since, and interior designers and celebrities have found many ways to incorporate them into their decor. "For me, the house and it's objects is supposed to be some crazy place that make you laugh," Friedeberg writes on his website.
Lenny Kravitz, who has an interior design firm of his own (Kravitz Design), has a Pedro Friedeberg Gilt Hand Foot Chair sculpture in his Paris apartment.
This dining area has an Alice in Wonderland vibe. I would love to get invited to eat here; you just know that the meal would be full of surprises. The chairs, finished in a muted blue-gray color, speak loudly via their shapes yet do not take over the room in color.
Give your backyard a unique whimsical edge using one or more hand chairs. Many are weather resistant, and can be used indoors or outdoors. Not the notch for holding a drink in the thumb.
