Going Mini in your Home: Mini Bar, Mini Library, Mini Spa and More

I work as a blogger for businesses although I do a variety of different types of writing. I particularly enjoy writing about all aspects of design and creativity. I think that your home should reflect your personality and that it should change as you change. More about me at www.kathrynvercillo.com and http://diaryofasmartchick.com.

One of the things that we have to be very conscious of here in San Francisco is space. I'm lucky to have snagged a fairly large apartment but most people here are forced to fit their design aesthetic into tiny areas. One of the easiest ways to do that is to scale down your ideas into miniature versions of what you'd love to have if you had a bigger space.

For example, you might love to have a full bar in your kitchen. It's probably not going to happen in your average San Francisco home. However, you could turn a rolling cart, a shelf or even a closet into a mini bar.

Likewise, it's not too common for people here to renovate their bathrooms to include full whirlpool spas. However it's simple to make a few small changes to your bathroom to create a mini-spa getaway in your own home.

There's no reason that you have to give up your design dreams just because you're dealing with a smaller amount of space than you would like to have. You just need to tweak, just and make it mini to make it work in your home!
That miniature chest of drawers is a great little piece to add to a bedroom. It's so much nicer than a traditional bed stand, isn't it? And it's the perfect size!
This tray provides a great mini table for the room. Since it's covered with a couple of unique decorative pieces, it's really an artistic tablescape that is small enough to fit well in this charming little part of the home.
When you have a small place, you need to create surfaces that don't take up a lot of room. Instead of getting one large coffee table, get two mini coffee tables like these. They can be separate, made into end tables or even stored away depending on how much space you need at any given time.
The mini-bar is a great small addition to any home. It might be a rolling cart bar like this one or it might be a small table top bar in the kitchen or entertainment room. This is one of those small things that will definitely be appreciated by your guests!
Instead of a mini bar you could make a mini wine cellar. Tuck it into a closet or even just a niche in the wall like we see here. This adds an elegant bit of surprise to your home.
It's the little lights that catch your eye first in this room but what really intrigues me is that mini backsplash. Most people who bother with a backsplash in their design really overdo it. I think this narrow mini-version is a great alternative!
Don't have enough shelf space in your kitchen for a big microwave? How about getting a mini-microwave built right into the bottom of one of your cabinets? So cute and so useful!
Make a mini-library in your home. My favorite way to do this is to take the door off of a closet, install shelving, add a great hanging light and get ready to read. If there's enough room in the closet then you can even throw in a low-slung chair and cozy up in your mini-library.
You don't have to have a large bathroom like this one to create a mini spa in your home. What you do need are the little touches that you see here - candles, a basket of luxurious soaps, a plush robe and slippers. Even the smallest bathroom can be a miniature slice of heaven if you take time to make it one.
Let's say that you actually have a little bit of money to spend. You have some outdoor space but not enough for the big swimming pool you would love to have. Everyone says just to get a hot tub for your yard but you really want a pool. A mini-pool might be the answer!
