9 Ways to Decorate with White (12 comments)
1. All white, everywhere. Simple, full of natural light, clean, and refreshing. This white bedroom doesn't have that opulent J.Lo feeling, but it's just as luxurious in its own spa-like way.

The slight off-white used in this space - plus the quilted headboard - DO give it an elegant vibe.

2. Linens only. If all white feels to stark to you, consider choosing white linens. To me, they always feel clean and fresh and hotel-like.

3. Build contrast. I love a little splash of white next to rich wall color...

Or next to busy walls. With anything other than white furniture, this room would give me a headache. As it is, I love it.

Another color pairing I love. The mix of cool blue, white, and a little bit of shimmer gives this kitchen the feeling of a pristine, practical jewelry box.

Finally, it's hard to go wrong pairing black with white - it's like turning a checkerboard floor into an entire room.

4. Light it right. The very first room in this ideabook was lit with bright natural light, giving the space a fresh, open feel. This space is much more romantic, thanks to the softer lighting.

5. Add it to the walls and floors. White is a natural choice for walls, especially in a space with architecture as grand as this.

I love whitewashed brick, too - it brightens up the space without losing the personality exposed brick offers.

White-painted floors are great, too, especially when they're wide-plank.

6. Whitewash your "mostly permanent" purchases. Cabinets are a semi-permanent way to incorporate white into your design. They make for a fun, bright kitchen.

Fixtures in the bathroom - like cabinets - are pretty permanent, but can be replaced. Also like cabinets, white fixtures make for a clean look.

8. Accessorize. A few white accessories brighten up a whole space. I especially like white dishes, which look great on open shelves or in glass-front cabinets.

Another great way to accessorize - thick white mattes on artwork. I love the effect of lots of similarly-framed works of art.

And finally...one last way to accessorize: with the white shag rug from my parents' mid-70s living room. Actually, i think the rug in this room looks great and thoroughly modern (even if it's still a bad idea for the serious red wine drinker...)

9. Or stick it outside. And if you just can't make it work inside, take it to the yard. I love long wooden tables anyway - but I especially like this fresh white version.

I just love all the white. White doesn't ever go out of style does it? It's a very adult color. (Can you call it a color?) I haven't had much white in my life since I've had kids so all of these pictures have me drooling. Very nice!

J. Lo, I love white, but I do tend to spill either red wine, coffee, or soda on my rug/couch on a weekly basis. All of my furnishings should be brown. Or I should only drink champagne...

I have always had white and I also have a 5yr old, who has had her little friends over. The rules are simple and probably stem from european upbringing:
1) Food is eaten in the dining room or kitchen (careful adults may eat or drink where they wish, the risk is normally minimal).
2) Baby/Toddler in highchair/ older toddler in booster, strapped in.
3) Children do not leave the table unless they thank for their meal and ask permission to be excused.
4) Children are not given permission to leave said table until hands and faces are wiped spotless with damp facecloth kept in kitchen for such purpose.
In this way children are taught cleanliness, manners and respect for the world around them. I, for one, regardless of color of furniture, do not want to live in an unnecessarily filthy house. Just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it's not there!
A few simple rules and pre-cautions will save you much work, money and sacrifice of your own personal style.

I don't have any toddlers running around but our dogs proved that a white loveseat just wasn't going to work in our living room and had to be recovered within 6 months of purchasing...OUCH! But I love the white cabinets in our kitchen, which make it feel bright and open and helps our white appliances to blend instead of sticking out and looking outdated....like they're not stainless steel for a reason.
I'm also a big fan of white linens whether on the bed or on slipcovered dining chairs. Anything you can throw in the washer and bleach is safe out our house! I also try to incorporate white vintage plates and ironstone pitchers, etc. into our house for a little pop here and there!

We love adding splashes of white in the home! White lamps can be a great but subtle way to add white to your living space http://www.theshadeshop.com/blog/2010/01/white-ceramic-lamps/

I LOVE white throughout a home. It makes it look light, bright, airy, and clean! I recently moved to a renovated farmhouse 3 mins away from a lake which had a definite dark, woody Victorian feel to it. Ugh! A lot of white paint swiped on cabinets, doors, and trim changed the entire feel of it to a beachside cottage! With 2 dogs and 2 cats, the slipcovers on my sofa/chairs are the only way to go and help keep my home clean and white!

I love white, but with three men and a dog, it's just too impractical.

It's always white for me! I like to layer white and cream with touches of black. Yummy!

Love the white look. Needs to be coupled with soft colors at times to avoid the clinical look. At times if the white is tooo white, I use a colour called Campaign Cocktail, a soft cream. Same effect with a softer touch. Love the white though.

Aaaaah! One of the greatest loves of my life! I too have little, sticky handed kids so many options are out, but the ones that I can use are white walls, white comforter covers, white washable pillow covers and white dishes. Many more options as well, but for me, the all white will have to wait a few more sticky years. This picture from "Dreamy White" blog is my dream.
