Glam Up the Kitchen (13 comments)
Mirrors. This amazing kitchen belonged to New York designer Miles Redd. While he's since redone his space, the spirit of this one lives on. He admitted that he didn't do a whole lot of cooking - the kitchen was designed for cocktails, really. His parties, though, always ended up in the kitchen, so he wanted a space to do them proud. These mirrored countertops, while not wildly practical for everybody, are more than fabulous, especially with the black and white palette.
In a "regular" kitchen, mirrors could be incorporated as a backsplash or on the walls - even as a part of the cabinets. And the sexy black and white, and cool floor design, could definitely translate into any home.

Shimmer. I love everything about this kitchen - the dark, sleek cabinets and the frosted glass, the marble counters, and the nice lines - but it's the backsplash that really gets me. Made of irridescent tile, it faintly shimmers at every angle. Part desert mirage, part glitter, all glam.

Red. This is actually the photo that inspired this ideabook. Everything about it screams "glamorous" to me - from the shiny wood floors to the fire engine red cabinets to the very sexy chandelier. It's a grown-up space that would still be great for kids.

The softer side of chandeliers. I like this room very much, especially in contrast to the dramatic kitchen above, because it shows that glamorous doesn't have to be just sexy. It can be soft, too. These colors are very pretty - not at all harsh - but they're dressed up by the chandelier.

Modern glam. Often when I think of glamorous spaces, I think old Hollywood, 1930's to '50's, lots of ladies in cocktail dresses smoking long cigarettes. Glamorous spaces can be more modern too, though, as this one demonstrates. I love the subtle, shimmery backsplash, the cool green and the dark cabinets, as well as the little square planters that solidify the room's aesthetic as firmly in the here and now.
Modern Makeover in Downtown Palo Alto
Grown-up color. This is clearly a functional kitchen - the busy shelves and laptop make it clear. But the exotic mustard color on the walls also gives it a ton of sophistication. It's not obnoxious, but it is bold and very different - the owners of this house took a chance, and it paid off.

Dramatic black. As with Miles Redd's kitchen in the first photo, this space is glamorous thanks to its grown-up color palette. Black and white together, complemented by some glass, is dramatic and cool. Here, I especially like the black molding around the windows. That makes a definite statement against the stark white walls.

Cool white. When I think of glamorous women, I often think of a very tall lady, dressed in white from head to toe (even in a turban). That's what this kitchen looks like to me. All white, or at least very pale, in the kitchen is a bold choice - just as dramatic as all black. Of course, it's important, then, to keep the space clean (white=glamorous, spaghetti stains=not quite as much).

Curves. If you've got the space, curvy counters are a great, unexpected way to add a little surprise and sex appeal to the kitchen. To me, they have a sort of 70's cocktail vibe, which offers a definite campy sort of glam. I love the grey and red combo here, too, and the fact that the kitchen layout is oh-so-functional.

What a great glamorous collection. My favorite is the fifth one (modern makeover in downtown Palo Alto).
I like it not just because I know Lynnee and her great family :-) I like it because I've been in that apartment and it's even more pretty than in the photos. This is one of the most beautiful modern makeovers I've seen around (and on top of everything Lynnee and her husband did it all by themselves!)...

Wow - they did that themselves? It looks so perfectly professional!

It is a professional kitchen (Alno). I was talking about the fact that they took both the architect/designer and the general contractor roles and designed and supervised and even built parts of the apartment by themselves!

I also like the white kitchen by Feldman Architecture. Great colors and the chandelier is absolutely stunning!

Most of them are too modern for me but the fourth...OMG- beautiful! I agree with sara: the colors and the chandelier are both amazing.

david14 - if you like that photo, check out this article about the kitchen: http://nymag.com/nymetro/shopping/homedesign/greatroom/kitchens/12019/
Even though my style is usually more modern/minimal (like adi_t's friend's kitchen) I can't get enough Miles Redd. He just seems like so much FUN.

I agree with David- the first kitchen is really cool (even though not very practical).

Thank you for the kind comments Adi & Kit. It is amazing even being considered part of the same collection with the others featured here. Kit - I am enjoying your idea books.

Lynee - you're really talented! And lucky to get to live among your work...

Thanks for the link Kit- great article. He is so right- everyone always ends up in the kitchen at a large party and this is a great kitchen for that!
