My Blog: Between Naps on the Porch http://betweennapsontheporch.blogspot.com/ I'm a self-confessed dishaholic with a love for creating tablescapes. When I'm not at work or "playing in the dishes" I'm working on the latest decorating project in my home, gardening, birdwatching or napping on the porch with a big lovable kitty named, Max. Every week, Between Naps on the Porch, hosts a tablescaping...

What Does Your Front Door Say? (46 comments)

When I first came across this wonderful, snow covered, blue door, I was completely mesmerized. Isn’t it beautiful?! This photo started me thinking...if you have a front door that requires painting, how do you go about choosing the color to paint it?

I don’t know about you, but I agonized and fretted quite a bit over this decision when I last had my home painted. I knew whatever color I chose, I’d be living with it for a long time. In the end, I chose a bold color and so far, I still love it. :-)

Did you know many cultures associate rather complex meanings to the colors we choose for our home, especially the color we choose to paint our front door? The front door is thought to be the “mouth” of the home, the entry point where energy, abundance and opportunities may find us. Wow...that’s a pretty big responsibility to hang on a front door!

I thought it would be fun to explore some of the symbolism and beliefs associated with the colors we sometimes choose for our front doors.
Throughout history, blue has often represented sky, water and abundance. Blue is also considered a great Feng Shui color. If you want your home’s curb appeal to suggest a feeling of abundance and prosperity, consider painting your front door a beautiful blue.
Blue Christmas door
Dark blue doors are believed to create calm and peace for your home...in turn, bringing those feelings to your guest and family who enter through and into your home. Additionally, blue is thought to bring lots of positive energy into a space.

Yellow is a color that evokes mental clarity, perception, understanding, wisdom, confidence, curiosity, humor and merriment. Wow, I'd like some of that coming into my home...wouldn't you?
Chelsea Yellow Door
How about a green door? Green is always a great choice for the front door since it's a color that is said to represent balance, peace, compassion, growth, renewal, and harmony.

Surprisingly, purple is a pretty popular color for front doors. It's symbolizes energy and is thought to invite many opportunities into your home.
Marielle
Some folks even believe you can improve your opportunities...or whatever aspect of your life that relates to the doors direction, or the direction it faces, simply by painting your front door purple. Whether you're hoping for a better career or better health, some say purple will help.
by Narofsky Architecture
There is only one exception with purple, and that is the northwest-facing front door. Better to paint this door gold, white, silver, or gray.
by Hirsch Associates LLC
White is a classic color for doors, especially on a cottage style home. Throughout history, white has come to represent purity, serenity, and virtue.
by SchappacherWhite Ltd.
In Feng Shui, a red front door means “welcome.” Interestingly, in early American tradition, it meant the very same thing. In fact, if a home had a red front door, tired travelers who might be traveling by horse and buggy would know the home was a place where they would be welcomed to stop and spend the night or rest.
Denise Posey
Of course, it's well known that red doors often hold tremendous symbolism for many faiths/religions.

In Scotland, homeowners paint their front door red to signify they have paid off their mortgage.
by Bella Porta
Think red is a little too traditional for your taste...this door just might change your mind. :-)
by Allison Cosmos
So, what color did I choose for my front door? I chose Benjamin Moore, "Heritage Red." Why that color? Simply because, I just loved the way it looked...no other reason. :-) I especially like a red door when it's sporting a white wicker basket overflowing with daises during the spring and summer months.

So, what is your favorite color for a front door? Attach a photo of your door with your comment, if you can. I'd love to see the color you chose!

What a great post! My door is Black.
Any thoughts about Black doors?
Hi Karen,
I didn't find any specific reference to black doors, but I can tell you that you are in excellent company! Black is the color of Mary Carol Garrity's front door...and I LOVE her style! :-)

Mine is White, similar to the one in your example. I love the meaning!
Thanks for sharing all these great ideas and beautiful photos.
What a fun post. I have been thinking about painting my front door for about six months. This gives me some food for thought. Thanks for sharing.
My door is blue like the 1st pic. It's easy to find us in our neighborhood!
My front door is white. HOA restrictions and it is a rental. The color I would love to paint it is this beautiful aqua. I have this in my inspiration file. This is designer Miles Redd. I love the silver hardware and the location of the doorknob!

You front door is gorgeous and you always come up with such fun ideas!
Opps! sorry, Susan! I hit submit thinking it uploads the photo! ha!

I wanted to ask why, if you have a NW facing door you should keep it white, gold or gray.

Cheers!
Tina
Hi Tina,
I think that must be a Feng Shui thing....I found that info. in an article that discussed a lot of the Feng Shui ideas. I must confess, I tend to do what I like and don't worry too much about the "rules."
Susan
I would love to have a teal blue door! =)
My front door is Purple. The actual color is called Grape Jelly. I saw the color used on a house in Ct and had to have it for myself. It is easy to describe my house when giving people directions - Just look for the purple door.
I added the wrong picture in my comment above , so sorry, so embarassing. Here is the purple door, not the scarf.

I loved this post! The pictures as well as the color descriptions. PS Love the basket of flowers on your door!
In My Own Style...both pics are great! LOVE your door...what a gorgeous color! The green wreath is really beautiful against the purple of the door!
I couldn't resist showing you a Before and After... After renovation, the door on my 1907 red-orange brick house is Pittsburgh Paint's "Cedar Chest." A true red clashed too much w/ my brick, so I went with a gorgeous rusty-red door and oiled bronze hardware. Believe it or not, it's a great "neutral" when decorating!
My Place to Yours...beautiful renovation! 1907...I am so jealous...love the older homes!

This post is perfect! We are replacing the siding on our historic home and thus, repainting! We are using Benjamin Moore Heritage Red on our front door too!! (Going with Hale Navy for the house ... another one of their historic colors. I prefer a dark slate grey but my hubby wanted it more blue ... so Hale Navy is a good compromise.) Red doors are definitely my favorite!!!
sarahj says:
wow such great ideas! My door is a slate black color. Its Sherwin Williams Black Fox. (the best paint, since of course, my husband works for them! :)
I really like the idea left in a comment of a teal door~ that would be beautiful! But I agree that your door is beautiful, Susan... makes me want to see the way you decorate the inside; im sure I would love it!

Great post Susan! Our door is currently Black but we are remodeling and thinking to change the door's color. We would now carefully consider the meaning of each color :-)

saraj- we did an interview with Susan a few months ago. You can read it and see her beautiful house photos here:

Mine says "boring rental house"... would love to give it some flair. Any ideas on how to do that without violating my lease?
to jtomalley: if you're not permitted to paint it, can you hang something on it to make it uniquely yours? I'm thinking wreaths reflecting the different seasons or a small wall sculpture?
This is the front door of a Los Angeles hacienda, with different patterns and colors on the inside and outside.
To bring in color, when your entry is all glass and wrought iron, you can paint above the door.

The most important part of the front of your house... a beautiful door.. thank you for the lovely pictures. Debra - www.design-house.com
Ok.. I'm new to all this but will try. We have an ORANGE door!! Actually, it's kind of a warm (not bright) orange - not pumpkin but somewhere in between. Disregard the front steps.. work in progress.
Here's a funny story...I took several Feng Shui classes with the thought that it would only help with my design practice. Not only does a red door say welcome, but it is recommended that you paint your door red if you are trying to sell your home (obviously only if it works well with your exterior!). We were getting ready to list the home and had just put a sign in the front "for sale by owner". Before it was officially listed, I painted the door red. My husband HATED it and couldn't believe I had done that...until the next day someone knocked on our door and offered our asking price. True Story!

I am glad our door is green, Susan, because I like what it signifies...Christine
Dish on Design Gal...what a great story! :-)
Jtomalley...I agree with Laurelmurals...a pretty wreath or a basket with flowers would be great. If you hang a basket, you can change out the flowers to go with the seasons/holidays. Your door would be a hit with your neighbors...they would be waiting to see how you change it each season. :-) I could see red and white flowers for Valentines, maybe with a heart or two mixed in. Green for St. Patrick's Day...pastel flowers with bunnies for Easter or Spring...Red, White and Blue for 4th of July, etc.... Then you could upload your pics to Houzz so we can see! :-)
We recently renovated our front door. Here are before and after shots. A HUGE improvement! We get many compliments about our new blue door.
Sunshineindustries...Love your new door! Amazing the way it changed your whole entry! Great color, too!
what a fun & beautiful post! our front door is just oiled wood- i haven't decided if we'll paint or stain. it all depends on what we do with the outside of the house, which is currently half white, half red brick with a green roof... what a mess! this post got my wheels turning... thank you!
this picture shows the inside of our front door- same as the outside.

I live in a small rented annexed house. The wall is painted somewhat saffron yellow and the door and the two small windows on either side of the door are currently painted chocolate brown. All wooden. I'm allowed to paint it any color I want.. Any ideas?

So many beautiful doors! Lauren (purestylehome) has the coolest orange door! Any thoughts on orange?

Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on if you need to take the color of the roof shingles into consideration when choosing a paint for your front door? My farmhouse is white with new dark green shingles with a rather boring white door. Would love to have pretty robin's egg blue door because I have a 'beach cottage' theme going and an vintage blue sign next to the door - but would that clash with the roof color? Anyone have a suggestion? Thanks to all!
Barefoot...I don't think it would clash with your roof, since you have the ceiling of your lower porch creating sort of a divide/separation between the upper part of the house and the lower part. What you might want to do...and I do this a lot when I'm testing colors...buy a couple of large sheets of poster board and buy a quart or what ever small amount you can purchase of the blue paint...then paint the poster board and using masking tape, attach it to your door. That way you can test out the color before actually painting the door itself. If you don't like it, you'll only be out the cost of the paint...better than having to repaint the door all over again. :-)
Rachel...love your door! It's such a rich, beautiful color, are you sure you want to paint over that gorgeous wood? :-)
Mia_jay...So many choices...you may want to type "doors" into the search engine at Houzz just to see all the color combinations that pop up. Sounds like you could go with whatever suits your fancy since you won't have limitation on the painting. So many combinations would go with the yellow walls.

Our front door is a life sized faerie door. I painted it four years ago just before a surprise birthday party that I was having for my husband. We've found it makes the house very easy to locate. It also creates a lot of smiles.
Susan - thanks for the great tip! Never would have thought using poster board! I'm definitely going to try it out once this snow melts...... :) Thanks again!

Loved seeing all the doors.

Here's mine. I really like the green this was painted before I moved here. Now I like what it represents: balance, peace, compassion, growth, renewal, and harmony.
Hey geo55 - Love the color you decided on! Exactly the color I was thinking for my front door. What brand & color is it? :) Thanks!

I love to drive around and look at doors...it was fun to see them all today..not sure when you posted this!! I have just repainted my home yellow - i already had the red door and the glass in the door has some red in it also..
Badbren...your red door looks great with the yellow you chose for your home! I have a soft spot in my heart for yellow houses...just love 'em!
