The Farmhouse Table (6 comments)

View Slideshow
There's no denying that the farmhouse table has sustained its romanticism over time. The raw aesthetic, bucolic sentiment, and sturdy functionality keep it en vogue in various settings and tastes. In more modern settings, it serves a subtly substantial grounding point for creating an updated and unique kitchen. Ever reliable, ever appealing in its agrarian reliability, the farmhouse table in all its forms is here to stay.
A favorite photo on houzz, for innumerable reasons. The table, flanked by metallic cafe-inspired chairs, provides the subtle eclecticity that makes this intricate (yet uncomplicated) room work.

Keeping the continuity with white chairs helps the room stay streamlined and simple while allowing for the table to stand out.

Adding chairs that strongly contrast the table in color and material, such as these Tiffany's blue metal chairs, modernizes a more traditional rustic table and ties it into an eclectic setting. The table becomes a sturdy backdrop for louder pieces around it.

This kitchen space works oppositely--the table itself is finished and elegant and far from a rustic worn kitchen table. Yet its surrounding elements such as the raw look of the basket and other natural details suggest a rural quaintness--with elegance.

The table need not be huge to add functionality and a pastoral touch.
Elegance & Decay
Placing a traditional table in a new setting creates a unique effect--here a thick and simple table gets a more modern edge as a breakfast nook with industrial chairs and a unique chandelier. The island in the foreground ties the room together perfectly.

Another view of the same kitchen shows how well the various materials mix to create a modern industrial touch layered over a clean farmhouse look.

This understated table serves as the perfect backdrop for a sort of Swedish simplicity and whim.

In its dark gloss finish, with its lightweight matching chairs, this table takes on an old-school elegance.

Another example of different integrating into all white.

A modern cut for a modern setting.

A rounder shape, softening out the stricter geometric lines throughout this room.

The whitewash on this traditional shape gives it a clean and sophisticated air.

Great gallery! So many options... we recently had a table commissioned by http://www.vermontfarmtable.com and it is wonderful! And surprisingly affordable considering it was custom designed. I encourage all to explore their own local wood shops and meet the table maker yourself - great experience and we know the history of our tables' wood.

I am in love and on the look out for a great farmhouse table, like the one I grew up with. I can just picture my three little ones, tucking in on a bench. jag86- your custom piece is wonderful.

very nice.
I just recently purchased a used table just like the one in the first photo, but smaller (seats 6...maybe 8) from Craigslist for only $50! I've ordered white slipcovers for parson's chairs I also found on Craigslist to go around it and I'm awaiting their arrival. Just goes to show you can do a chic farmhouse dining room without breaking the bank! Find other creative and thrifty ideas at my blog. www.thislittlenestblog.blogspot.com .

What a great arrangement of photos . Who doesn't love the comfort and strength of a farmhouse table? Love them!
What fun ideas you all have! Thanks for the shout out about using local artists and custom pieces. It reminds me that a smaller farmhouse table in our house was created by my hometown's carpenter, and is a rectangle table that opens with a hinge to hide things inside, like an old school desk. Brilliant and beautiful.
