Great Color Combination: Black + Blue (3 comments)

View Slideshow
When people mention "black and blue" together we always think about bruises. Unless you happen to be one those people who finds bruises beautiful, you probably don't think too often about putting this color combination together. That's too bad; it's a great combination because the colors compliment each other so well and will look right with other shades throughout the house.

The best thing about this color combination is that there are so many different shades of blue to choose from and they all go well with black. You can also play around with different textures of black, changing the shininess or opaqueness, to get a different feel when using this color combination.

You can use black and blue together in both big ways and small ones. Paint the walls of a room one of the colors and then decorate using the other. Mix black and blue furniture in one space. Or get simple items like rugs and curtains that already have both black and blue worked into their design.

Have fun with this idea!
The bathroom is a great place to start playing around with this color combination. You can start just by using black and blue towels to see how they change the mood o your space. Play with tiles, bathroom furniture and wall art to find out what shades you like best.

How can you make black walls work without creating a space that's too dark? Add a bright pop of blue color. This beautiful blue door makes this room look light and airy even though the walls are dark.
Black Walls
That same shade of light blue can give a party atmosphere to your dining area. A sleek black table becomes an interesting place for conversation when blue chairs and decor are added. You could always replace the chairs with a darker set to create a more serious mood as needed.
color combos - blue
It's more common for people to have blue walls than black walls. That way, you can add cool black designs to the area to bring out the blue shade. Here we've got an intricate black headboard pressed up against the wall, letting the blue peek through. Black frames with an open design like this would have the same effect.
Cozy Retreat
A black dining area inside of a blue-walled room is another way to make this color combination work. There's a little bit too much going on in this kitchen for my tastes (and I would make the napkins blue to match the walls) but I like the general idea of this design.
Rustic meets Mod
The dark carpet here gives us an idea of what it would look like to have a black staircase lined by a bold blue wall. Wouldn't it be a gorgeous design idea?

Play with putting different patterns together that incorporate both colors. This black and blue floral pillow on top of a black and blue striped chair show how the way that these colors compliment each other will allow multiple patterns to work in one space.
Blue and White Spare Bedroom
A black and blue rug can be a great way to bring these colors together in one item for your home. This peacock design is a beautiful choice.

Introduce a third color into the combination to create a really interesting look. Since black and blue are complimentary, it's easy to find another color that works with both of them. The pink here is an excellent choice.

White is another great color to add to your black and blue room. Black and white art and decor go really well with a blue room.

love that last picture!!! has a feel of old hollywood glamour!
Always love black furniture and my last home had black walls in the dining room...very dramatic. And now that turquoise is the color for the year...I'm really happy:} Of course these are Carolina colors and my son's wedding colors when they got married last June.

I was not certain about the composition of countertops and appliances and walls and cabinet colors when I did my kitchen but knew I liked the blue cabinets and black appliances!
