If there was one material that abounded at this year's spring High Point Market, the enormous furnishings industry trade show in North Carolina, it was bone. We were surprised at its amazing versatility — with some pieces making bright, bold statements and others blending beautifully with their surroundings. From small boxes to breathtaking chests, the detailwork and craftsmanship were something to behold. Here are a few of our favorite, easy-to-incorporate finds using bone.

vixvax I was wondering the same thing. Is this actual animal bone? If so, it's morbid. I don't decorate with dead things.

Suzi Mathison Well there is considerable bi-product from the meat we eat. We eat dead things. Why not use all things possible from these animals? I, too, would like to know where they are getting the bone.

vixvax @sqwirly - Well, that's true. I do eat meat and I think utilizing every part of the animal makes sense. I am against harvesting animals, though, for fashion or decoration only. I really hate the recent trend towards taxidermy decor.

julesgriffith ALWAYS CHECK LABELS AND ASK QUESTIONS IF THERE IS NO LABEL. Most of the time it is not fake and real bone from dead animals is used. It can be from a variety of sources depending on how it was "manufactured". Using animals for home decor is no different than for leather, fur or anything else. Inhumane treatment and cruelty run amok for the sake of so-called fashion so it is important to know how the animal became a "product".

cecefox I, too, clicked through to find out what kind of bone, where it comes from. My first reaction was a bit of horror. But it does make sense that bone from meat cutting factories must go somewhere. If it is useful, that's a good thing, not wasteful. But I wish the entities that set up these comment lines would just answer, not let us go round and round without relevent information.
