Living Spaces Wow at Decorator Showcase
Top San Francisco designers remake a luxury home for the 2012 showcase, offering inspiration for your own kitchen, dining room and more
With a moss-covered fireplace, plywood painted backsplash, abalone shell chandelier and much more, the show home of the 2012 San Francisco Decorator Showcase brought out all of the stops.
Designers reconfigured the rooms in a stately 19th-century house, in San Francisco's well-to-do Pacific Heights neighborhood, in more modern layouts and outfitted them with gorgeous light fixtures, hand-painted details and lustworthy accessories. Luxe details, such as leather-lined drawer pulls, a rich mohair rug and an outdoor chandelier, showed up everywhere.

Modern Pantry/Tearoom By Tinsley Hutson Wiley and Allison Bloom These designers created a stunning Union Jack backsplash (right) out of painted and finished plywood. The elements of this pantry, from the backsplash to the shelving to the burlap curtains to the zinc counters, are relatively inexpensive and easy to install.
From show house to your house: If you're a renter, don't be afraid to make small changes in your kitchen. Removable wallpaper on cabinets, temporary tile on backsplashes and a few fun accessories can make all the difference in a drab and ordinary kitchen.

Downstairs Kitchen and Lounge By Green Couch Interior Design Every grand home needs an indoor-outdoor space, and Green Couch Interior Design made the most of this home's expansive square footage with a combined kitchen and living space that opens up to the outdoor patio. The mild San Francisco weather begs for spaces like this, and neutral furnishings keep the focus on the outdoor view.

From show house to your house: When working with an open kitchen and living space, choose furniture that makes sense with each room's design and color palette.

City Salon By Steven Henry and Michael Booth, Bamo An extra-large living space can be hard to organize — traditional living room setups just don't work well in long rooms. These designers broke up the space in a salon style, creating multiple conversation areas with French and Italian antique furniture, and with Moroccan rugs acting as visual dividers.
From show house to your house: Don't feel restricted to the standard living room setup of couch, TV and coffee table. Create multiple seating areas around tables, fireplaces or a beautiful view.

Dining Room By Marysia Rybock, Scavullo Design While this dining room called for a grand design, the designer put a modern twist on the traditional table and chairs arrangement.

Multiple purple Lucite tables are informal enough for casual meals and can be pulled to different parts of the room. A beautiful light fixture by Jonathan Browning made of abalone shells echoes the nature-inspired hues in the tables, chairs and moss-covered fireplace.

From show house to your house: If you don't have a formal dining room, consider adding one or more small tables to your living room.

Downstairs Terrace By Weatherill & Associates Designer Sean Weatherill honed a dilapidated playground into a modern back patio. Lined in warm and durable ipe wood, the deck will wear beautifully. Sleek outdoor furniture from Henry Hall provides the only neccesary decor.

From show house to your house: Materials are key when designing an outdoor living space. Ipe, a Brazilian wood, is often chosen for its strength, sustainability and natural resistance to decay.

Roof Terrace By Frank Holbrook Design This elegant outdoor pagoda off the master bedroom is the perfect outdoor room. Striped outdoor fabric from Perennials offers shelter and frames the stunning view of the San Francisco Bay. Designer Frank Holbrook took the design over the top with an antique chandelier, plants and accessories in a traditional European estate style.
From show house to your house: Outdoor pillows, lighting and other accessories can transform an average patio into a welcoming and comfortable extension of your home.

Entry Garden and Portico By Davis Dalbock, Living Green The entrance previously felt lacking and needed a contemporary update. Succulents and oxtails were the ideal addition for this south-facing wall.

From show house to your house: Succulents have a sleek, modern look that's subtle enough to work into any landscape. They're also easy to plant and maintain, and work well in many climates.

Charmean Neithart Interiors, LLC. This is fun! Showcase houses are great because its just the designer and their ideas. That combination usually produces some cutting edge design. Thanks for sharing. Charmean

Fine Art & Portraits by Laurel There is nothing mild about San Francisco weather, so it doesn't beg for an outdoor room. It's cold, windy and sunny all winter, and cold and foggy all summer. The rooftop terrace is gorgeous, what a view! But that pergola and chandelier are gone with the first wind.

thegreenbee I think that "pantry" is more qualified to be called a galley kitchen. Since there is a designated kitchen space also, maybe it is more of a "bonus kitchen"? (Hot new trend alert! Haha)

pabolton The terraces are really lovely, but the pergola and chandelier would be "gone with the wind". Salon also gave me some good ideas.
