Guest Picks: Area Rugs
Maggie Stephens Interiors
I'm a decorator who can't get enough of antique finds, amazing textiles, fresh flowers or coffee! I live in Cupertino, CA but love the rainy days that remind me of my hometown of Seattle.

Area rugs are sometimes an afterthought in a room. However, when they often can cost as much as (or more than) your sofa, it can be a good idea to start from the floors up and pick a statement rug to base the rest of the room off of, especially if you like to buy neutral furnishings. Whether it's bold pattern or bright color, here are 20 area rugs that you won't be able to ignore.

Lirico Rug - $349
Even an abstract patten can take a backseat when it's in a neutral shade.
Kerman Rug - $3,157
To make this rug bohemian instead of formal, add low furniture, hanging lanterns, dark walls and white or leather floor cushions.
Happy Stripes Rug - $300
The aptly named "Happy Stripes Rug" would be great layered over a jute rug in a room with a linen sofa, white glossy coffee table and spindle chair.
Sierra Antique Ikat Midnight Rug - $399
I don't think you can take two steps these days without bumping into an ikat print, but I love that this is so overscaled. It adds something new to a familiar pattern.
Izmir Outdoor Dhurrie, Indigo - $49
Waterproof but with the appeal of an antique textile, is this rug not the perfect combination? Use it outside or in a high-traffic area; you can sponge it down if needed.
Red Diamond Recycled Yarn Indoor/Outdoor Rug - $59
This reminds me of the rugs I had growing up. Surprisingly, they go with almost everything, but I'd go with a midcentury couch and drum coffee table with Moroccan poufs.
Hand-tufted World Classic Bluish-Gray Wool Rug - $397.99
The pattern is much larger than it appears. It is vaguely Moroccan, but still traditional enough to be feminine and pretty paired with other pastels.
Color Field Rug - $399
This reminds me of something you'd find at Anthropologie, only a lot cheaper! Pair it with a couple traditional pieces, then throw in a midcentury accent chair to keep the room fully on its toes.
Handmade Red Orange Wool Rug - $191.99
I would put this yummy rug in a teen's bedroom and base the whole color scheme off of it.
Awning Stripe Dhurrie Rug, Black - $49
You can't go wrong with black and white stripes; they jazz up even stuffy traditional rooms. Do go for a pop of color on the furniture, though.
Bargello Red And Blue Rug - $170
This is such a fun way to add a bunch of different colors to your home. It would be great in a living room or kid's room.
Red Over-Dyed Ziegler Rug - $4,648
The over-dyed look is a big trend right now. You get the appearance of pattern, but only one wash of color (in this case, a bold red-orange). I'd pair this rug with rich navy blue upholstery.
EMMIE Rug, Flatwoven, Pink - $24.99
This sweet little rug would be perfect for a small space, or stitch two together for a larger room.
Handmade Alexa Chevron Wool Rug - $188.99
I love this take on the chevron trend — it reminds me of a Schumacher print. Other sizes and colors are currently available.
Winsdor Overdyed Grove Turquoise Rug - $300
An over-dyed look, this rug would be so beautiful paired with sunshine yellow — especially in a kid's playroom.
Jill Rosenwald Fallon Hex Poppy Red Hand Woven Rug - $73
Jill Rosenwald is known for her amazing patterns and she doesn't fail with this honeycomb pattern in yummy colors. This is an attention-seeker. To keep from dominating the room, I'd do lacquer walls and a dramatic sofa.
Satara Modern Damask Teal Rug - $329
For a flirty, feminine room, you can't go wrong with damask. I like this in the teal green to keep it from being too girly and sweet.
Gray Grain Rug - $455
Wood grain is such a beautiful motif. It's a modern look though. This would be fun in a monochromatic scheme of grays.
Homespun Damask Trellis Navy Blue Rug - $149
I love the contrast of the blue and white. This would update a formal living room nicely.
