Creating a classic Arts and Crafts built-in room divider is on our list of must-do renovations. The traditional design combines form and function to define two or more spaces elegantly. These dividers help to organize large spaces while maintaining an open floor plan and keeping rooms bright and airy. Most have square, tapered columns and storage, but new variations create the same effect.

| This Green Lake-area residence in Seattle is the result of an extensive collaboration with the owners to recapture the architectural character of the 1920s and '30s Craftsman homes in the surrounding area. Preserving and honoring the built-in room divider was a must. |

olldbobbi Sorry to go off subject for a minute but that coffered ceiling is amazing! I'm glad I don't have to paint it, tho.

Ventana Construction LLC Thanks for featuring our photo in your ideabook! The thing I like best about what architect Kim Goforth did with this design is to mirror the half wall and column detail at the entry to the home (you can find this in our "Green Lake Custom Home" project file), so that that when entering the house, the rooms are clearly defined with consistent millwork.

lgro Beautiful pictures.. at one point my house had a similar divider to the first picture - previous owner had removed them. Brushing up on my woodworking skills so that I can replace them.

astraea I love the idea of built-ins for room dividers, but I would worry that they limit furniture placement after-the-fact. I'm also not that fond of low shelves, except for things you rarely need.

eztia Low shelving is wonderful for families with children, to store story books, board games, jigsaw puzzles, and so on. Also nice for visiting nieces or grand children to have a place where they know they can touch and play with anything on those shelves.

Greg Mix - Registered Architect Beautiful photographs. I love Arts & Craft style homes. Such eloquent results with such simple trim work. One of the things I like about designing with the Arts & Crafts style is the flexibility it has. It will work on Bungalows, Sixties Ranches or even in modern apartment buildings. Here’s a photo of one we completed six years ago.
