As an experienced early childhood educator, I can say that young children do not do well with opaque storage containers. They need to see their stuff; otherwise major dumping occurs.

By using picture- labeled clear plastic bins on shelves and/or in cubbies, the preschooler can go directly to the desired toys and can put them away appropriately. Forget using lids on the boxes. It's best to label both ends of the container with pictures of the toy(s). You can either cut images of the toy off its box and or or download the image from a website.

You can create a parking lot on a shelf for storing larger toy trucks, cars. etc. Create parking spaces lines with colored tape. Vary the width to suit the vehicles. The child soon learns which vehicle fits in which space.

while these ideas are great, they are super expensive! Sorry, but I don't have $300 plus to spend on kid's storage items.

Yes but very steep shipping at $15, so wanted to see if I could find locally?

Um cute but----for most of these it would be a decision---sell the kids to buy the toy containment systems!

Now I remember WHY there are so many DIY blogs out there----

All well and good but very little of these things can grow with your child. We are going through a makeover with our teen now. At 15 she still has a few years left at home. She wants cool stuff but mom and dad don't want to have to makeover the room again when shes done with it. Of course we need tons of storage right now and it looks like the only ones that do this is Ikea!

Colorful storage serves multiple purposes. In addition to being attractive, assign each child a color for keeping his or her belongings in them. It teaches them to be responsible by making sure they put their toys away in their own bin.

And if you think about how much $$ you spend on all those toys anyways, the storage suddenly doesn't seem like a lot (and lasts through many years of different stage toys)!
