Inspired by 1950s interiors and design, architect Francisco Arredondo of North Arrow Studio designed his modern Austin, Texas, home with beauty, affordability and utility in mind. With the space, part of a four-unit development, Arredondo wanted to achieve a "deceptively uncomplicated" aesthetic. From free-hanging lightbulbs to a row of dramatic skylights, clean lines and well-curated decor demonstrate a space-efficient, thoughtfully designed home.

When you enter the home, the idyllic backyard garden space instantly draws you to the living room through high ceilings and a narrow hallway. Arredondo installed sliding glass doors along a double-height wall, allowing the backyard greenery to "seem as though it's almost inside the home," he says.

Arredondo's sweet dog, Sandy, shares the unique space with him. The stained concrete floors are perfect for his paws.

Arredondo's favorite place in the house is the living room, with the sliding doors open to the backyard. On top of the TV-stand bench, a DIY project, is a Crosley record player. Arredondo says, "I play the soundtrack to the movie Charade on repeat." A coffee-sack-covered ottoman provides a place for his feet to rest. The corner is covered with leftover Cumaru pieces from the wood flooring from the second floor. White couch: Eames daybed

The living room coffee table is an example of one of Arredondo's many creatively repurposed pieces in the home. "The coffee table was originally a shipping crate for a very nice piece of furniture. My client kept the furniture, and I kept the box. I painted it and added some casters," he explains. Tree trunk stumps are also repurposed as wooden side tables.

White Panton chairs by Vitra create a chic, idyllic outdoor seating area. Beyond the greenery is a small creek and the train track for Austin's metro rail. Arredondo says, "The back lot was designed to take advantage of the vegetation native to the site."

One of the most creative pieces in the home is this hanging lightbulb fixture, which was created out of necessity. "We had a tight budget for constructions and finishes, so I had the idea to make a beautiful decorative gesture out of common building products. It's made of electrician wire, sockets and bare bulbs," Arredondo says. "A little design thought and a good electrician can go a long way."

The more time you spend in the home, the more beautiful details you discover. One example is the multiple geometric skylights in the main hallway ceiling. They are painted in a way that appears sky blue only at certain angles.

Arredondo uses potted plants to bring some of his inspiring view of nature inside. Having both designed the house and created many pieces in his home, he offers this advice: "Take your time finding the right stuff, and don’t be afraid to make something yourself. He also credits local interior designer Kasey McCarty for helping him decide his decor.

Since the home is part of a multiple dwelling unit, one of Arredondo's biggest design dilemmas was creating a sense of privacy. "The solution was to organize the spaces so that the public areas are located along the common wall and the private, more quiet spaces are positioned along the nonshared walls," he explains.

Under the stairs are chalkboard-paint-covered custom cabinets. "I start and end every day by making lists," Arredondo says. "They keep me organized and sane."

"Junk, or stuff that I feel deserves a second life and has not met its potential for beauty or utility, inspires my decorating the most," Arredondo says. Throughout the house he gave topo chico, tree stumps and wooden crates new purposes. These kitchen island bar stools are another example of old items given a second home, but Arredondo shares that he's eyeing the Tractor Stool designed by Craig Bassam.

Arredondo's two favorite elements of the home are the big sliding doors and the skylights. "The house would not be the same without them," he says. A collection of funky, fun and colorful cast concrete pigs made by Arredondo sits above a small ledge on the right.

The beautiful dark wood floors throughout the second floor are a species called Cumaru, very similar to ipe. The leftover pieces were used in the kitchen countertops.

The master bedroom features soft lighting and large windows that allow natural light to highlight the relaxing feel of the space. Arredondo keeps his favorite items in the home in this room: his Poul Kjaerholm's PK91 folding chairs. "If you stare at those things long enough you will learn everything you need to know about furniture design," he says. Many of the items in the home, such as the corner chair in the master bedroom, are treasures found at local thrift stores. "I found this chair at a local thrift store for $10, stripped it down and refinished it," Arredondo says. "I was about to lose my mind trying to figure out how to weave a Danish weave pattern, then I was introduced to Molly Purnell, an incredible local furniture designer and a master furniture weaver." Some of his favorite local places to shop include Collectors Corner and Antique Marketplace. Duvet cover: Ikea

The master bathroom features a vibrant palette of colors, including blue tiling that extends from the shower to the floors. About picking the color palette of the home, Arredondo says, "At this point it is still a work in progress. The palette is pretty color neutral, but I have plans to add a lot more color. I am starting with blue."

The inviting front door is a typical solid-core metal door, the type you can usually find in commercial buildings. "I was not satisfied with the way it looked, on the house and I wanted to do something fun and with a little more charm," Arredondo says. "My builder, Richard White, and I got the welder to cut a bunch of holes in the door and add some standard steel pipe. It took me a while, but I learned how to cast resin and filled the pipes with that."

Outside, a concrete ribbon driveway hints at the clean, modern lines found inside. The bright and peaceful "castle" faces a quiet, tree-lined street, and Arredondo says his proudest homeowner moment is "when people from the neighborhood say something nice about the place without knowing that I designed it."

Magdalena Bogart Interiors The architecture reminds me of homes I see in Germany. Beatiful connections to the outside, small and practical, love the concrete floors for Sandy or living with dogs in general.

marsia We are currently designing our own house with a builder and an architect who draws up what we want and adds a little here and there, so we know how hard it is to design something clean and flowing and functional. This is wonderful, with beautiful, personal details that make the house so homey. This is just how we want our house to feel. Beautiful job, and lovely personal touches!

Fine Art & Portraits by Laurel Well, it's definitely an architect's home. Theoretical. Not inviting. Seating doesn't look comfortable. No art. Makes good photos, but...
