contemporary kitchen by Mascheroni Construction
Islands on casters are common, but this little stroke of genius goes one better: It slips beneath the countertop when it's not needed. In a small kitchen, such flexibility makes all the difference in function.

Talk about teeny! At first glance you might think there's no way to squeeze an island into this compact kitchen. I don't know how much room this homeowner has to walk around it, but the extra storage and prep space would be worth it for me.

I love the way this little red number blends decorative appeal and functionality. As a bonus, the rug picks up the color of the island base and carries it into the room.

Small islands earn their floor space when they're cleverly designed. Drawers, baskets and shelves house sundries, and there's even room to tuck in a stool that can be pulled out for a guest to perch on.

This petite island's top has just enough overhang to accommodate a single seat. Note too how the transparent stool adds little visual bulk, which helps preserve an open feel.

This kitchen probably could have accommodated a bigger island, but the diminutive blue version gives the space extra breathing room.

A towel holder on one end puts this cottage-style island to work.

The end of this island could have languished as wasted space, but the owners jumped on the opportunity to tuck in a microwave. This is a great solution when you have kids old enough to warm up snacks or zap leftovers.

Here's repurposing at its best. An old sewing table is transformed into a little island, with one-of-a-kind character that absolutely makes the kitchen.

Gina Johnson These are great pictures, I love these islands. The one in the last picture is so practical and cute, but looks woefully inadequate with all of those essentials piled up on top.

Sheri Gibson - What do you think is the absolute minimum clearance around an island. I've been debating an island for years in my little kitchen...

franki7 Great! Island on castors...I did this about 10 years ago and my family thought I was nuts. With "lock downs" on them and being moveable - it worked. Thank you very much. franki

patscats2 I love the old sewing machine stand used as an island. That is the first time I've seen that. I would not do well with an island in the middle of my kitchen. In no time I'd be full of bruises from bumping into it. I wouldn't want an island in the middle of the floor because it would just be in my way.

Some of these islands are so tiny I don't see how they could provide any practical function. I need a larger surface to work. I'd just go sit at a kitchen or dining room table to do some kitchen chores, i.e., dicing and chopping, rather than trying to manage it on a tiny surface.

richiec We use an antique arts and crafts style table with a piece of glass on top to protect it as an small island. It was made by my wife's grandmother's uncle. I put wheels on it so it can be easily moved.

Sandra Alger, CID, Fresh Ideas by Sandy love the pictures -- another way to save space would be to have the sink and dishwasher in the island...

mmsalg All of these are great Lisa. They really do get the ideas flowing if you need a little more counter space. I added three more from makers on this site http://custm.co/hz/57. The first one is a Hydroponic Kitchen Island...pretty cool!

fishingheart Hi, I was wondering how you got an old sewing machine stand to be that high, I have actually sewed on a foot petal one and they are no higher than a desk because you sit while you sew,
