My back windows look out on a not-so-hidden backyard gem: a gigantic three-car garage with a loft. It's unfinished inside - we don't even park there - but it's really cool, and definitely a future project. One day, it won't just be filled with exercise equipment and the stuff we can't fit in our house.
So since we moved in, I've been a little obsessed with garage renovations. On TV, in magazines and online, I'm all over anything that suggests an interesting, unusual way to use garage space, or even ways traditional garages can add to the overall look of a house.
Here are some of the garages that are inspiring me right now:

I love this space - and not just the yellow car (though I love that, too). Even the most traditionally functional spaces can still look good. I love these red walls and the variety and placement of the artwork. It's fun and energizing and makes for a great place to work.

This garage, which spans the width of the house, adds amazing work space - or even social space that runs inside and out. It's functional in the traditional sense, but wouldn't this also be a great staging space for a late afternoon lunch?

A really great garage provide usable space plus it looks great - open or closed. I love the way these doors work with the rest of the house - it looks seamless.

Sometimes a traditional garage isn't the best solution. This low-profile rancher is perfect with a carport - even from the outside, the home feels open and airy.

One of the downsides of older homes is the lack of modern features - like garages. This addition, though, does a great job of preserving the integrity of the design, and it doesn't even have to be hidden.

My favorite thing about the garage built into this renovation is the way the doors pay homage to the structure's barn heritage.

In a similar vein, this blue door punches up an already punchy home. Plus, just like the second home in this book, the garage is in a great spot to use for indoor-outdoor living space as well as a regular old garage.

This isn't exactly a garage - it's a boat house (the kind that doesn't hold an in-water boat). It's gorgeous, though, and serves the same sort of purpose as a traditional garage. It holds vehicles, and needs to be dirt-friendly, but it can also be a great place to hang out.

And this one is (this is the inside of the boat house pictured above). With even a couple of Adirondack chairs, this place is welcoming and perfect for a late afternoon. It's large enough, though, that it could function as a party space, or even a guest house.

Kit Pollard I'm not exactly sure, but I'm guessing western Washington state. It's so gorgeous, isn't it? The light just kills me.

Julian Green Great selection Kit. The Eisner garage has me thinking how clearly you could see the car parts with just natural light. What a space!

Julian Green actually - looking closer, looks like the "garage" is actually an artist's studio. The garage doors allow heavy equipment and materials to be dropped off for sculpture work.

HERMOGENO DESIGNS All the garages are great. I live in a condo high rise and sometimes miss living in a detached home. If you love these garages, check out the Maserati garage design competition at http://www.designdriven.us/.
