Easy Green: Indoor Trees
Bring a Great Plant Inside for a Hit of Joyful Color
It's rare to find a universally-appealing anything, especially a hue. But I'd like to go out on a limb and say that every room could use a shock of green — not in the form of paint or even a throw pillow mind you, but a lovely, verdant plant. No matter the room, a little foliage looks good. So a lot of foliage, say, as in a whole tree, looks even better, right? In the cases below, absolutely.

This minimal room was begging for a little height. Happily, these two statuesque trees willingly obliged.

Much like the hits of purple and yellow throughout this open living space, the ponytail palm at center adds a playful element.

This room is filled with warm tones. A tree in the corner adds a welcome cool foil to all the reds and browns.

Not a green thumb? Incorporate leafy greens via a wall mural instead.

With floor-to-ceiling windows, this outdoor plant feels like it's part of the room inside.
Cole and Son's Woods wallpaper provides the look of a forest of trees, minus the small woodland creatures.

As in nature, a bit of green pairs particularly well with neutrals. A few palm tree prints, some bouquets of foliage and the hint of a tree to the left help to round out the design of this natural-toned room.

Go all out with a tree designed into the architecture of the home.

On the other end of the spectrum, a few small topiaries may be all the green you need, as in this spick-and-span kitchen.

And though it might seem cliche, positioning a tree in the corner of the room can make a huge impact. This one's no wallflower: With the way it's ever-so-slightly tilted, it no doubt would be included in any dinnertime discussions.

Anyone besides me notices that all the new up and coming designers never ever put anything live or even a fake in the rooms they design. I miss the real decorator's of a time gone by, i.e., Christopher Lowell and others. BTW, if anyone is a fan of Matt and Shari from the old Room by Room, you can catch them on PBS channels, if you're lucky enough to have it in your area. Unfortunately the PBS channels in my area have not picked up there show, but my friend in California sees it and is making tapes for me. She told me Shari still decorates with her fakes and they look good.
There are such wonderful, high quality silk orchids if the location won't let a real one thrive or the client isn't up to caring for it. One great service here in town "rents" live orchids and cares for them weekly, exchanging them when they are done blooming for ones just starting to bloom. Nice idea if you can afford it.
