Houzz Tour: World-Class View in Manhattan Condo
Bright accent colors energize neutral furniture in this contemporary New York City condo, but the view may be the best accent of all
The New York skyline is the boldest accessory in this home. This 24th-floor high-rise in the West Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan overlooks the city's skyline, with views extending out over the rest of the city. Designer Drew McGukin used this view as a backdrop for the client's modern spirit. This was the client's first home, and starting a collection of beautiful furniture was high on her priority list. McGukin focused on classic, quality pieces in neutral colors and added color through fabric and wallpaper.

| The boxlike structure of this apartment presented some challenges in the interior design. Although the stunning view was the highlight of the space, the floor plan was difficult to organize for livability. McGukin and his team extended the existing kitchen by adding cabinetry and changing out the cabinets with a darker lacquered paneling. The extended cabinetry helps define the kitchen and the dining room areas, but the great room still feels open. | Although most of the furniture is neutral — designed to last a lifetime of interior changes — McGukin spiced things up with colorfully patterned pillows, turquoise chairs and modern wallpaper. The enormous windows provide plenty of natural light, so solar shades were a must. Chandeliers, table lamps and floor lamps are layered with the natural lighting. A custom Lindsey Adelman chandelier adds the perfect midcentury modern touch to the dining room. Simple Gio Ponti chairs and a Room & Board table draw the eye past the dining area to the stunning view beyond.

| The location of the dining room allows it to share lighting with the kitchen and the living areas. The chandelier, floor lamps, kitchen task lighting and large windows create layers of light. Task lights, low lights and sculptural lights were added in key places. |

"When I think of midcentury, I always think of one crazy wallpaper after the next," says McGukin. The idea of a modern take on the groovy grandmother was McGukin's main inspiration for all the textiles. Kravet fabric dresses up a Jonathan Adler chair in the office.
