I should start off mentioning that ceiling fans, for the most part, are objects I immediately take down when designing clients' homes. But lately I've come across some spinning sensations that have rendered me interested in installing them, purposely, versus tearing them out.
From industrial classics to spinners that seam to disappear, here's a collection of spaces and ceiling fans which play nicely and live well together. Kinda like the opposite of anything you see on Jersey Shore.

Here's what's referred to as a dual rotational ceiling fan. Hmmm, I wonder where it gets its name? Probably the duo of fans that rotate. Yeah, I'll go with that. This option is a great way to sport the vintage-industrial style and keep yourself cool at the same time. These often run at a higher price, but they're worth it. Not having an eyesore smack in the middle of your ceiling is worth a pretty penny. Check out this one from Lamps Plus. http://www.lampsplus.com/products/37-inch-acqua-brushed-nickel-dual-head-rotational-ceiling-fan__h8463.html

Since dual rotational fans pack so much style and nostalgia, they're an excellent item to mix with other design aesthetics. The tailored look of this master bedroom is made a bit less serious with the addition of the rotating rockstar.

My issue with ceiling fans 99 percent of the time: They're installed in rooms with low ceilings and small dimensions, so they pretty much swallow the entire space. The key to getting them right is using them in open, airy spaces where they'll do their job without making bedrooms or living rooms "ceiling fan rooms." If you like the look of these brushed nickel beauties, check these out.

| Depending on your overall look, ceiling fans can function as accessories or art. In tropical spaces, islander-style fans are the way to go. The banana leaf look brings the natural elements of the outdoors inside. If you're not actually living in the tropics, this is still an excellent way to bring some organic style into your home. One little tipsie to keep in mind when buying an islander: Stay away from ones with attached lights for a more authentic, higher-end feel. Here's a great islander fan from Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001KU79GC/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B0002QRK3M&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1RT74XZ37CP7BWQBW4GH |

| Okay, I promise not to keep harping on islander fans, but they're the rage these days, and the more information shared, the better. Patios and sunrooms seem to showcase this style best because the natural material on the fan coordinates gorgeously with a view of nature. I like to layer the texture and tone of the fan with other elements in the room. In this example, the designer brought the same bamboo-ish, woven look in with window shades. |

| Painted blades: classic and sophisticated. If you've got a fan hanging below a ceiling sporting a decorative, architectural treatment, make it stand out with contrast. Well, that is, if you have the space. Remember, if you're in a 10x12 room with an 8-foot ceiling, a ceiling fan is not the best choice because it _____________? That's right, swallows the room. 10-foot ceilings and higher facilitate a ceiling fan beautifully. |

On the flip side, if you've got a showstopper of a celing and don't want to detract from its beauty, stick with ceiling fans sporting a similar finish as your ceiling. In this case, the fans simply do their job of cooling people off, then simply fade away.

| Contemporary fans are game-changing. In all-white or all gray rooms, a stainless or pewter ceiling fan can simply ground the space without taking over.

never say never, though- i did recommend a simple oil-rubbed bronze retro version to a client this last summer when their house was uncomfortably stuffy, even with the air on. they declined, and said they'd rather suffer. gotta love that attitude!
For a large portion of the U.S. and beyond, it is highly impractical to not have ceiling fans; they are significant energy savers and life savers. You've just scratched the surface here, DecorD- you're right, there are many tasteful and varied styles now- thank goodness.
(I have no connection to this company - I just think they're brilliant for coming up with this design!) Hopefully more styles will become available soon.
Also folks remember to adjust the direction the fan blows inthe summer and winter so it works properly.
Not a fan, but it's better than the alternative.
